Summary

Clover spends two hours reading Hugo's letters aloud to Claudia, pausing whenever Claudia asks her to repeat a passage. The reading unlocks a memory for Claudia: the November day she fled to a bookstore after arguing with her husband, who refused to let her leave the house wearing trousers. The bookstore was the only place she felt she could be her true self. Her husband found her there and apologized in his charismatic way, and Claudia realized that if she wanted to have a child, she had few choices but to forgive him.

Claudia then reveals a private bargain she made with herself: after writing her final letter to Hugo, she decided that if he wrote back trying to change her mind, she would go to France to be with him.
