Summary
A year and a half before the main events, Eshonai is at her mother Jaxlim’s home in Narak when Venli bursts in from a tempest, clutching an emerald that holds a captured spren. Venli explains that lightning pulls the spren through from the other side; she snatched this one before it could return. The gem glows with a strange, smoky light, unlike any spren Eshonai has ever seen. Venli calls it Stormform and declares it power, but Eshonai hums to Reprimand, arguing it could destroy the listeners. Venli retorts that their people are already being destroyed and that they should try a different solution instead of clinging to ancient songs.
Eshonai hums to Betrayal and storms out into the tempest alone. She walks eastward through the storm, attuning the Rhythm of Winds, and reaches the edge of a chasm in the exile city. Facing the wind, she shouts at the Rider of Storms, demanding to know what choice she has: either let the humans destroy her people or turn away from the one thing that defines them—their minds. She declares she will not give up their minds, even as she acknowledges that they must take the new form to the Five for testing.
In the darkness after a series of lightning flashes, she hears rock scraping. By the next flash she sees a massive chasmfiend with claws gripping the chasm rim mere feet away. Eshonai stands perfectly still, knowing that running would mark her as prey. The beast lowers its enormous head close enough that she could stab its eye without lunging. Then a small spren made of white fire appears, zipping around her and leaving a trailing afterimage. By its light she watches the chasmfiend retreat into the chasm. Heart pounding, she attunes Anxiety and hurries home, the strange spren following her.

Character Development
Eshonai is caught between her duty as general and her personal convictions. She gave up her dreams of exploration to protect her people, but she draws a firm line at surrendering their minds. In the storm she reveals an almost prayer-like rage at forces beyond her control, refusing to accept gods that only demand. Her stand against the chasmfiend demonstrates her composure and courage under mortal threat, while the white spren’s appearance hints that she may be more than just a warrior.
Venli appears obsessed and reckless. She speaks to Awe (a rhythm that suggests reverence for the discovery) and shows no concern for the storm or their mother’s condition. Her manipulation of Eshonai’s sense of duty foreshadows the lengths she will go to pursue power, even at the cost of her people’s freedom.
Jaxlim is in an episode where she sees her daughters as children, reminding the reader of the listeners’ fragile generational memory and the erosion of their culture.
Themes, Symbols, and Motifs
- Choice and Identity: “Either we let the humans destroy us, or we turn away from the one thing that defines us?” The chapter questions whether survival is worth the loss of self. Eshonai’s defiance of the gods is a declaration that identity is non-negotiable.
- Storms as Opposition and Reflection: The tempest mirrors Eshonai’s internal turmoil. She respects storms but does not fear them, much as she respects her people’s traditions yet fights against their limitations.
- Gods and Tyrants: Eshonai rejects the old gods who only make demands, equating them with tyrants. This foreshadows the true nature of Odium and the spren who enslave the singers.
- Stormform and the Cost of Power: The new form glows with a smoky, almost corrupt light. Its introduction is the first step toward the Everstorm and the listeners’ transformation into the Fused’s army.
- The White Fire Spren: A mysterious entity that appears to a future Radiant at a moment of extreme danger. It may be a precursor to an honorspren or another Cognitive entity watching over Eshonai.
Why This Chapter Matters
This flashback chapter is the origin story of Stormform and the tragedy that befalls the listeners. It shows the exact moment the tool of their downfall enters Narak, contextualizing the decisions made in Words of Radiance. Eshonai’s internal monologue reveals the depth of her commitment to freedom, making her later choice to bond the stormspren (out of desperation) all the more heartbreaking. The appearance of the white fire spren hints at a path not taken—a Radiant bond that could have been. The chapter also reinforces the unfair dilemma the listeners face, building sympathy before the eventual catastrophe.
Study Questions and Answers
-
Why does Eshonai hum to Betrayal when Venli brings the stormspren? Venli’s accusation—that Eshonai makes snap decisions based on ancient songs—cuts deeply because Eshonai has sacrificed her dreams to lead her people rationally. Yet Venli implies that rejecting the new form now would be the same stubbornness that arguably put them in this position. Eshonai hums to Betrayal because she feels her sister has twisted her dedication into a flaw, betraying the trust between them.
-
What does Eshonai’s encounter with the chasmfiend reveal about her character? She freezes instead of running, demonstrating that she has learned the proper response to a predator. This shows her composure, her deep knowledge of the chasms despite giving up exploration, and her ability to suppress fear. The chasmfiend scene also parallels the later moment when she faces the stormspren’s influence—she stands firm against external threats.
-
How does the white fire spren connect to larger themes in the Stormlight Archive? It appears at a pivotal, dangerous moment and seems to protect Eshonai by distracting the chasmfiend. In a world where spren are drawn to strong emotions and potential Radiants, this spren may be an early sign of Eshonai’s suitability for a Nahel bond. The image of a falling star (a common sight for those seeking a spren) suggests that even before her fall, a spren was watching, hinting at a different future that never occurred.
