Kaladin Stormblessed, drained by unrelenting battle fatigue, is relieved of combat duty just as the enemy strikes Urithiru. Navani Kholin must feign cooperation with the brilliant Fused Raboniel while secretly investigating the physics of Light, a path that leads to the explosive discovery of anti‑Voidlight. In Shadesmar, Adolin Kholin stands trial for the ancient Recreance and with his deadeye Maya uncovers the truth: the spren chose sacrifice, not betrayal. Shallan Davar, fractured among her personas, hunts a Ghostblood spy and confronts the long‑buried memory of her first spren. Venli, a singer Regal burdened by guilt, takes the first real steps toward Radiance and helps free Kaladin’s resistance. When Taravangian assassinates Rayse and Ascends as the new Odium, the stage is set for a contest of champions that will decide Roshar’s fate.
Full Summary
Rhythm of War opens a year into the True Desolation. Kaladin Stormblessed, highmarshal of the Windrunners, pushes through re‑ignited battle shock during a mission to evacuate his hometown, Hearthstone. Dalinar Kholin recognizes the deepening cracks and quietly removes Kaladin from active duty. Broken, Kaladin returns to Urithiru and attempts to become a civilian surgeon under his father Lirin.
Meanwhile, Navani Kholin oversees the coalition’s fabrial research. A phantom spanreed warns her to stop imprisoning spren, and she discovers a hidden ruby leading to the ancient tower spren, the Sibling. The singer forces, led by the Lady of Pains Raboniel, invade Urithiru through subterranean tunnels. Raboniel corrupts the Sibling’s pillar with Voidlight, suppressing all Radiant powers. Navani surrenders and is forced to collaborate with the Fused.
Kaladin, his powers unreliable, hides with the unconscious Teft and becomes the last free Radiant inside the tower. Guided by the Sibling’s garnet light, he destroys two of the four nodes that sustain the protective shield, but Raboniel’s eavesdropping leads her forces to the third. Kaladin flees into a highstorm, badly wounded.
In Shadesmar, Adolin and Shallan lead an envoy to the honorspren capital, Lasting Integrity, hoping to recruit them for the coalition. The honorspren instead put Adolin on trial for humanity’s crime of the Recreance. Through the trial, his deadeye spren Maya finds the strength to speak, revealing that the spren willingly sacrificed themselves to break bonds they feared would destroy Roshar. The revelation shatters the honorspren’s case and begins Maya’s slow reawakening.
Shallan, juggling the personas of Veil, Radiant, and Formless, hunts a Ghostblood spy placed among her agents. Her investigation forces her to recall a suppressed childhood memory: she bonded a Cryptic named Testament, then killed her with a Shardblade. The betrayal sends her spiraling until Adolin’s steadfast love helps her integrate Veil and Radiant. She refuses Mraize’s order to assassinated the Herald Kelek (Restares) and breaks with the Ghostbloods.
Navani’s forced partnership with Raboniel becomes a duel of wits. She deciphers the pure tones of Honor, Odium, and Cultivation, then creates a vacuum‑isolated anti‑Voidlight gemstone. Raboniel uses the discovery to grant her insane daughter a permanent death. When Navani realizes Raboniel has been listening to every conversation with the Sibling, she understands she unwittingly gave away the nodes. Yet in the final hours, Navani activates a hidden fabrial that protects the Sibling’s heart, then scrambles to defend the last node.
Venli, a Regal cursed with knowledge of her past betrayals, secretly recruits listener dissenters and practices her fledgling Willshaper powers. She frees Lift, who heals Kaladin, and later reveals her Radiant nature to Leshwi, sparking a rebellion among the Heavenly Ones. Leshwi and her Fused join the listeners, choosing a third path away from both human and Odium.
Kaladin, pulled from a nightmare vision by Wit’s story “The Dog and the Dragon,” speaks the Fourth Ideal of the Windrunners: “I accept that there will be those I cannot protect.” He summons living Shardplate, saves his father, and helps Navani in the tower’s final defense. Moash, sent to break Kaladin, kills Teft and Phendorana, but Kaladin defeats the Pursuer and endures.
In Emul, Taravangian’s oscillating intellect finally falls to its lowest point. He activates the last threads of the Diagram, arranging the betrayal of the Veden army. After Szeth stabs him, Odium pulls Taravangian into the Cognitive Realm, where the old king uses Nightblood to kill Rayse. The Shard of Passion reaches out, and Taravangian Ascends as the new Odium, determined to save the cosmere his own way.
The book closes with Navani’s Bondsmith bond reawakening the Sibling, Kaladin healing soldiers’ minds, Shallan at peace with her integrated self, and Wit unknowingly compromised by Taravangian’s manipulation of his Breaths.
Main Characters
- Kaladin Stormblessed – A Windrunner battling crippling battle fatigue. He finds purpose as a mental‑health advocate and finally speaks the Fourth Ideal, fully accepting his limitations.
- Shallan Davar – A Lightweaver fractured into multiple personas. She confronts her childhood murder of a Cryptic spren, integrates Veil and Radiant, and breaks free from the Ghostbloods.
- Navani Kholin – A scholar who bonds the Sibling to become Urithiru’s Bondsmith. She pioneers the discovery of anti‑Voidlight and leads the fabrial resistance against the Fused.
- Venli – A singer Regal and secret Willshaper Radiant wrestling with guilt for unleashing the Everstorm. She covertly rebels against Odium and takes the first steps toward redeeming her people.
- Adolin Kholin – A principled duelist who stands trial in Lasting Integrity. Maya’s testimony exposes the truth of the Recreance, redefining spren‑human relationships.
- Taravangian – The elderly king of Kharbranth. His fluctuating intelligence leads him to betray the coalition, assassinate the vessel of Odium, and Ascend as the new Shard.
Themes
- Mental Health and Healing – Kaladin’s battle shock, Teft’s addiction recovery, and the group‑therapy sessions show that confronting trauma requires community and acceptance.
- Identity and Multiplicity – Shallan’s personas and Venli’s dual existence as Regal and Radiant illustrate how trauma and self‑deception fracture identity before integration can occur.
- Scientific Inquiry and Power – Navani’s fabrial experiments uncover the physics of Investiture, turning song itself into a weapon and a means of unification.
- Occupation, Resistance, and Cooperation – The singer takeover forces humans and singers into uneasy alliances, culminating in Leshwi’s rebellion and a joint escape.
- Sacrifice and Redemption – Teft’s loving self‑acceptance before death, Venli’s public confession, and Eshonai’s posthumous Radiant gift argue that redemption comes through genuine sacrifice.
Symbols
- The Shash Glyph – Kaladin’s slave brand, repurposed by civilians as a mark of defiant hope, converts shame into solidarity.
- Anti‑Voidlight – The radiant negation of Voidlight represents the fusion of scholarship and warfare and introduces the permanent death of Fused.
- The Rhythm of War – The blending of Honor and Odium’s pure tones into a new, unstable Light encapsulates the tension and potential unity of opposed forces.
- The Dog and the Dragon – Wit’s parable about a dog who fails to become a dragon but saves a child reframes heroism as steady compassion rather than impossible perfection.

Common Questions and Answers
1. What is the Rhythm of War?
The Rhythm of War is a new Light created when Navani and Raboniel harmonize the pure tones of Honor and Odium. It serves as a metaphor for the potential unity of opposed forces and becomes the key to understanding the physics of Investiture.
2. Who becomes the new Odium?
Taravangian, the elderly king of Kharbranth, kills the vessel Rayse with Nightblood and Ascends to the Shard of Passion. His dual capacity for extreme intelligence and profound emotion, granted by Cultivation, makes him a uniquely dangerous Odium.
3. How does Kaladin overcome his depression?
Kaladin does not “overcome” his depression in a single moment. He finds purpose in helping other soldiers with battle shock, accepts the Fourth Ideal to acknowledge his limitations, and learns that community and small acts of compassion are what keep him going.
4. What did Navani discover in the tower?
Working with Raboniel, Navani discovers the pure tones of the Shards and creates anti‑Voidlight—a substance that can permanently kill Fused. She also activates the Sibling’s protective shield and bonds the tower spren to become a Bondsmith, reawakening Urithiru’s defenses.
5. Why did the spren really break the Recreance?
During Adolin’s trial, Maya speaks and reveals that the spren willingly sacrificed themselves. The bonds were broken to prevent the ancient Knights Radiant from destroying Roshar, making the Recreance a mutual choice rather than a human betrayal.
6. What happens to Shallan’s personas?
Shallan confesses that she killed her first spren, Testament, as a child. The persona Veil, created to blank that trauma, integrates into Shallan, and Radiant also merges. Shallan remains a single, integrated individual, though she still carries the scars of her past.
7. How does the book end?
Urithiru is liberated, Navani bonds the Sibling, and Kaladin obtains living Shardplate. Adolin and Maya’s bond transforms the honorspren’s view of humans. Taravangian becomes Odium and manipulates Wit’s memories, setting up the contest of champions in ten days.
8. What is the contest of champions?
It is a duel between Dalinar’s champion and Odium’s champion, negotiated to conclude the war. If Dalinar wins, Odium must return Alethkar and Herdaz and maintain peace; if Odium wins, Dalinar’s soul becomes an immortal servant. The contest is set for the tenth day after the book’s end.
