Summary
Kaladin jerks awake in the darkness, his hands bound by his own design to prevent him from lashing out. Disoriented and still battling the weight of his depression, he calms himself enough to free his hands. A distant song roused him, and a faint garnet light on the wall speaks with the Sibling’s frail voice. The tower spren reveals that the Fused have located the final node—inside the model of the tower in the infirmary room—and, more urgently, that all the captive Radiants will soon be killed. The Sibling asks Kaladin to send Rlain to them.
Kaladin wakes Teft. Recognizing that the enemy’s discovery forces their hand, they abandon Lirin’s cautious approach and decide to act. The plan: Lift will sneak into the infirmary to wake the comatose Radiants, while Kaladin draws out the guards and distracts the Pursuer. Teft will neutralize any remaining guards. Dabbid, who rushes back in, tells them Rlain is on the fourth floor, shaken by something involving Venli. He and Rlain will inform Queen Navani before hiding in the room, awaiting rescue after the Windrunners escape down the tower’s exterior with the Radiants.
Teft insists that Kaladin swear to run rather than make a hopeless last stand. He points out that the Pursuer always waits at the node, setting a trap. Kaladin promises: he will follow Teft out. They dress in retrieved Bridge Four uniforms and move into action.
