Summary

The chapter opens with Shiori and Seryu being spat out of the whirlpool into a seagrass field outside the dragon palace. Seryu is unconscious at first, but as he wakes, his transformation into dragon form begins. Unlike Shiori's brothers, whose crane transformations are agonizing and accompanied by screams, Seryu's change is swift and effortless, like slipping into armor. Scales cover his skin, his legs stretch into a long tail, whiskers sprout, and horns appear.

Seryu warns that sharks are coming and that the search storms—whirling columns of water and air—are scanning for them. He explains that his grandfather, a god of dragons, created the dragon oath and is not bound by it, which is why he could harm Seryu. Shiori insists on rescuing Kiki, who carries a piece of her soul, but Seryu argues they must flee. Shiori then discovers Gen, the stone boy, still breathing, and refuses to leave him behind. Seryu points out this is her chance to go home, but Shiori is resolute: Raikama sacrificed far more than time for her, and she will do right by her. She came to find the Wraith, and leaving would make the journey meaningless.

Shiori reveals that Elang knows who the Wraith is, but Seryu dismisses the idea—Elang despises humans and would never welcome them. Shiori threatens to go alone, and Seryu scoffs at the impossibility.

A beaked whale appears, carrying Nahma. She opens her palms and Kiki bursts out. Nahma explains that Kiki swallowed the elixir but kept it lodged in her throat, and wouldn't wake until Nahma eased it out. Shiori learns it was Seryu's idea for Kiki to do this. Nahma explains her earlier deception was necessary—she spent centuries earning Lady Solzaya's trust and couldn't risk discovery. She advises taking Shiori to Elang, who can save Gen and knows the Wraith's location. Seryu doubts Elang will help, but Nahma produces a dragon scale—Elang's token—which will compel him to help. Seryu takes it and, following dragon tradition, exchanges his own emerald scale as a favor for a favor.

Nahma declines to join them, saying she cannot leave her two children, both dragons like their father. She buttons Shiori's collar like a mother would and warns the Westerly Seas are cold. Before she leaves, Seryu casts a sleeping spell on her so it will appear she didn't help them. They depart for Elang's castle in the West, with Seryu's scales shifting color to blend with the seagrass as they outswim the sharks.
