Summary
The chapter opens with Shiori noticing a massive gathering of birds above the southwest gate, near the imperial dungeons. Kiki remarks approvingly that Gen seems to have an affinity for birds, and Shiori realizes the commotion means he is in trouble. She sends Kiki to fetch her brothers—specifically Benkai, who is soon to be high commander and holds authority over the guards—then rushes to the dungeon with Takkan.
At the dungeon, Shiori confronts Chief Minister Hawar, who has detained Gen on charges of casting dark magic over the breach. Hawar claims Gen might be colluding with demons to harm Shiori, but she sees through his lies. She points out that Gen is a thirteen-year-old boy who was invited to help, and she accuses Hawar of having bought the loyalty of the sentinels. When Hawar refuses to relent, Takkan grabs him by the collar, snaps his fan in half, and presses a dagger to his throat, forcing him to let Shiori inside.
Shiori finds Gen in a cell, bruised and bloodied, with a broken nose. He waves weakly to reassure her he is alive. Outside, Kiki has led the gathered birds in an attack on Hawar and his men—eagles and falcons batter the soldiers while crows peck at the minister himself. Benkai arrives with his own men, and Shiori and Takkan take Gen to the infirmary, then to Takkan's chambers to rest.
Gen explains that he failed to retrieve the amulet because Bandur noticed him near the breach. He reveals that the amulet is wedged under a layer of rock in a small puncture in the breach—rock that is darker, almost crimson, like the pupil of an eye. Shiori insists on retrieving it herself, refusing Takkan's offer to go in her place. Takkan argues that he is the only one who can do it, but Shiori is firm, reminding him of the vision she saw in the waters and his promise not to be recklessly brave. The two reconcile when Shiori reaches out to touch his arm, and Takkan takes her hand.
Shiori decides Gen is no longer safe in the palace and plans to send him home by ship, secretly telling her father that she is departing for Iro. The next day, Shiori's brothers reveal a flying basket they have built—a sturdy, kite-like contraption with six silk ropes.
