The novel's present-day timeline culminates in Ben Ames's wedding to Sunny. The ceremony takes place at a church, with Julia Ames and Mark Ames walking their son down the aisle. Sunny arrives visibly pregnant, wearing elf braids and a wedding dress that makes her pregnancy unmistakable. The reception is held at Lettuce Pray, a restaurant closed for the occasion.

At the reception, Julia dances with Ben. Anita Marini, Julia's mother, initially prepares to leave but stays after Mark invites her—a small but significant moment of reconciliation. The chapter then jumps forward in time, compressing years into a few pages.

Two and a half years after the wedding, Mark dies of an aortic aneurysm. Julia's mother's memory declines. Helen Russo dies. Alma Ames graduates, travels to Accra, and returns. Sunny graduates.
