What Happens at the End: A Literal Account

The novel's final stretch follows Anna, the narrator, through a harrowing sequence of abduction, experimentation, and a fire that destroys the Organic Provisions farm. After she is drugged and taken from the Holistik lounge, she wakes in a glass-walled house in the Gunks, where she discovers her name on a list of candidates for a project called Everlasting. She is later taken to the farm, where she is subjected to experimental procedures that permanently transform her body—webbed hands, greenish skin, excess flesh, and brittle hair.

The climax comes when a fire breaks out at the farm. Anna, trapped and transformed, calls for help on an old rotary phone. Victor Carroll, his face burning with fire-laced grafts, staggers toward her. She tries to strangle him with a telephone cable, but it disintegrates; he wraps his hands around her throat. She sees his face without the grafts for the first time—ordinary, with sunken cheeks and a feeble jaw—before her eyes close.

She survives. A nurse later tells her she was found at the farm after the fire and suffered a concussion. The pills and supplements from Holistik caused violent bodily changes.

The Climax: The Fire and Its Aftermath

The fire at the Organic Provisions farm serves as the novel's climax. It destroys the Gunks farm (only a cracked mirror remains in the dried grass), exposes Victor's crimes through international news coverage, and forces Anna's final confrontation with him. The fire is also the moment when Anna's transformation becomes undeniable—her hands are ruined, her body is permanently altered, and she can no longer pretend the changes are cosmetic.

The aftermath is covered in the final chapters, which function as an extended denouement. Anna regains the ability to move, cook, and care for herself over many months. She begins volunteering at Applebaum Care, where she visits Sally Brown—the woman formerly known as Saje—who has been freed through a mental disorder defense and has undergone reconstructive surgeries.

Anna (The Narrator)

Anna survives the fire and the Everlasting experiments. Her appearance is permanently changed—children run from her, and strangers look away—but she says she doesn't mind it, finding freedom in being safe from desire. Saje / Sally Brown

Saje is freed through a mental disorder defense and undergoes reconstructive surgeries. In her hospital room at Applebaum Care, she reveals to Anna that Victor took advantage of her too, that Anna was deliberately targeted as a test subject for Everlasting, that the meeting with Henry was engineered through the E-ros beta, and that Helen's death was unintended—Helen unknowingly used lethal experimental products. Saje admits she once left Anna at the Gunks, prepared to let her die if she didn't wake. She demonstrates her metal-hybrid skin and pleads for Anna to return, but Anna leaves, saying goodbye.

Victor Carroll

Victor disappears after the fire. The documentary traces his childhood—his mother fled an abusive marriage, leaving him with an alcoholic father—and links it to his later control over women's bodies. He remains missing, though people occasionally claim to have seen him. Anna speculates that with his money and technology, he could look like anyone or anything.

Helen

Helen's death is revealed to have been unintended. She unknowingly used lethal experimental products from her bedroom supply. Sally says Victor was heartbroken—Helen was his favorite.

Henry

Henry fled and is yet to be found, according to the documentary's bonus feature. Anna's meeting with him was engineered through the E-ros beta, an algorithm designed to bring all targets to him.

Alice

Alice gets almost an entire episode of the documentary. She announces her memoir and a new job at Sotheby's as director of provenance remediation.

Anna's Parents
