Summary

In this chapter, David Sedaris reconstructs his father Lou's long history of inappropriate behavior toward his children, and the family's complicated, often dismissive response to it.

As a boy of about ten or eleven, David complained of a stomachache at dinner, hoping to skip school the next day. His father took him to the upstairs bathroom, locked the door, and had him bend over the sink while Lou—in his underwear—examined his anus. Nothing was inserted; the father simply stared at the area. This happened at least two more times during David's youth. When David was fourteen, he found blood in his underwear and, terrified that his mother would tell his father and trigger another exam, buried the underpants in a ravine beside the house.
