Summary
Kaladin returns from patrol with forty soldiers who are cheered by Bridge Four. The men, once broken by Sadeas, are now confident — Kaladin plans to make them sergeants to lead other bridge crews. He feels a strange stillness in the air and learns from Sigzil that a highstorm is due. Rock shoos away a sketching ardent. Kaladin eats quickly to join Dalinar’s guard during the storm.
Meanwhile, Shallan practices sphere-swapping with Tyn. Tyn teases her about sailor curses and the need to expose her safehand in foreign lands, which horrifies Shallan. Tyn then reveals that the Veden king Hanavanar, his son, and six highprinces have been killed by the Assassin in White, sparking a succession war. Shallan worries about her brothers but lacks a spanreed to contact them. The caravan halts on Macob’s advice, avoiding night arrival and the coming storm.

- Pitt – Formerly a hopeless bridgeman, now expresses remorse and a willingness to “pretend to be you,” showing early leadership ability.
- Rock – Functions as a caretaker, shooing away the ardent and feeding the men.
- Shallan – Struggles with her dual identity; she blushes at the thought of uncovering her safehand, still naive despite her cons. The news of home plunges her into worry, reminding her of her mission.
- Tyn – Amused and manipulative; she withholds information until it suits her, and continues to shape Shallan as a con woman while testing her limits.
Themes, Symbols, or Motifs
- The Stillness Before a Storm – The title describes both the literal highstorm approaching and the political storm in Jah Keved. Kaladin notes the camp is “holding its breath.”
- Reforging – Pitt’s statement that men can be reforged echoes the core theme of bridge crew transformation and personal redemption.
- Secrecy and Information Control – Tyn dribbles information about the Veden crisis; Shallan hides her true background even from her teacher.
- Listner Song of Secrets – The epigraph about Smokeform, spren, the Unmade, and death foreshadows the Listeners’ dangerous transformation and the threat of the Everstorm.
Why This Chapter Matters
This chapter sets the stage for intersecting crises: a highstorm is about to hit the warcamps, forcing characters into position; Kaladin’s new sergeants will soon be deployed, speeding up the rehabilitation of the bridge crews. At the same time, Shallan learns that Jah Keved is in chaos — a conflict that will reverberate through the Alethi political landscape and directly touch her family. The “stillness” underscores that both the physical storm and a storm of war are imminent.
Study Questions and Answers
-
How does Kaladin’s training of the bridgemen illustrate the chapter’s theme of reforging?
Pitt’s confession and Kaladin’s response show that the men, once broken by Sadeas, are now being reshaped into responsible sergeants. The term “reforged” literally appears, and the new steel caps replacing carapace armor symbolize their transformation from throwaway slaves into soldiers. -
Why is the news of the Veden succession war significant for Shallan’s character arc?
It snaps her out of the con-artist game and reminds her of her real identity and family. The danger to her brothers and uncertainty about her homeland add urgency to her mission at the Shattered Plains, while also deepening her internal conflict about lying to Tyn. -
What is the connection between the epigraph and the title “The Stillness Before”?
The Song of Secrets stanza describes “Smokeform” and “Unmade touch” bringing “death near.” This suggests the Listeners’ impending transformation into stormform, which will shatter the fragile peace. The chapter’s title captures the calm before that catastrophic event, mirrored by Kaladin’s sense of an eerie quiet.
