Full Summary
Words of Radiance opens where The Way of Kings left off, with Kaladin installed as captain of Dalinar’s guard and the bridgemen of Bridge Four freed but still in peril. The Alethi warcamps seethe with political tension; Dalinar’s proclamation to redistribute gemhearts and force highprinces to cooperate alienates almost everyone, most of all Sadeas. Dalinar reveals his true goal: to refound the Knights Radiant, and he tasks his son Adolin with winning Shards in duels to rally support.
Meanwhile, Shallan Davar continues her apprenticeship with Jasnah Kholin aboard the Wind’s Pleasure. During the voyage, Pattern, a Cryptic spren, fully reveals himself, and Jasnah teaches Shallan about Surgebinding and the Cognitive Realm. Jasnah confesses that she is hunting the legendary city of Urithiru, believing that the parshmen—the docile servants who inhabit every household—are actually the Voidbringers, and that history has been deliberately falsified to hide the truth. Before Shallan can absorb the implications, the ship is attacked, Jasnah is murdered by Ghostblood assassins, and Shallan Soulcasts the hull to escape, stranding herself in the Frostlands.
Kaladin, meanwhile, trains his new battalion of bridgemen and experiments with his Surgebinding abilities under the supervision of Sigzil and Syl. He gains mastery over the Surge of Adhesion, running on walls and even flying. But his world is upended when Highlord Amaram—the man who murdered Kaladin’s squad and stole a Shardblade—arrives in the warcamps and is welcomed by Dalinar. Kaladin’s hatred festers, and when Moash reveals a plot to assassinate the ineffectual King Elhokar, Kaladin is tempted. Moash’s conspirators argue that Dalinar would be a better king, and that Elhokar’s removal is a necessary amputation. Kaladin’s conflicting promises—to protect the king and to help Moash—begin to tear his bond with Syl apart.
Shallan, after surviving the shipwreck, journeys across the wilderness with slaver Tvlakv, a caravan of refugees, and a band of deserters. Using Lightweaving, she projects authority, redirects the group toward the Shattered Plains, and earns the grudging loyalty of the deserter captain Vathah. Once in the warcamps, she allies with the indolent Highprince Sebarial, gaining independence, and begins a courtship with Adolin while secretly infiltrating the Ghostbloods under the alias “Veil.” She learns that the Ghostbloods arranged Jasnah’s assassination and are searching for Urithiru, and she realizes that her own family is entangled with the same group. Using Pattern and her Lightweaving, she uncovers Amaram’s secret correspondence with Restares and discovers that Amaram possesses the Shardblade that once belonged to her brother Helaran—the man Amaram killed.
Adolin’s dueling campaign reaches a climax when he willingly enters a four-against-one disadvantage bout. Beaten and near death, he is saved when Kaladin leaps into the arena, speaking the immortal words: “Honor is dead. But I’ll see what I can do.” Kaladin’s display of Stormlight and martial prowess shocks the assembled lighteyes, and he uses the moment to accuse Amaram of his crimes. King Elhokar, instead of granting Kaladin justice, imprisons him. Dalinar, despite believing Kaladin’s story, is forced to publicly reject the accusations after seventeen witnesses—all bribed—contradict Kaladin.
While Kaladin languishes in a cell, Dalinar’s plans disintegrate. Sadeas hides behind the legal precedent that a year must pass before the duel with Adolin can occur, and the highprinces refuse to commit to the expedition against the Parshendi. Dalinar is humiliated when his recorded visions are stolen and circulated with mocking commentary. Yet his resolve hardens; he decides to march on the Plains to force a confrontation. He releases Kaladin after Adolin locks himself in an adjoining cell in solidarity.
Kaladin and Shallan are thrown together when a saboteur collapses a bridge under Dalinar’s army, sending them into the chasm depths. Forced to survive a highstorm and a chasmfiend, they forge a fragile trust. Shallan reveals her Shardblade, and they cut their way to safety. In the process, she discovers that the Shattered Plains form a symmetrical pattern—an ancient city shattered by some cataclysmic weapon—with the Oathgate at the exact center. Armed with this knowledge, she and Dalinar prepare a final assault.
The Parshendi, meanwhile, have been transformed by Eshonai’s adoption of stormform. She overthrows the ruling council, imposes the form on her people, and prepares to summon a terrible new tempest—the Everstorm—that will reverse the long war. Dalinar’s coalition of four highprinces marches to Narak, the hidden Parshendi city, as the Weeping (a period without highstorms) ends. On the final day, red-eyed Parshendi singers begin a ritual that crackles with red lightning. As Adolin’s cavalry charges, the Everstorm starts to form.
Shallan rushes to the Oathgate chamber and activates the ancient fabrial with Pattern as a living key. Amid the shrieking winds, she transports the entire Alethi army—and the plateau itself—to the lost city of Urithiru, an enormous tower filled with forgotten wonders. Kaladin, having finally embraced the Third Ideal of the Windrunners (protecting even those he hates), flies out to stop Szeth, the Assassin in White, who has been lashed to kill Dalinar. In an aerial duel above the converging storms, Kaladin outpaces Szeth and lets him fall after Szeth acknowledges that his “Truthless” designation was a lie. Kaladin retrieves the Honorblade, and Syl returns as a radiant Shardblade.
In the aftermath, Urithiru becomes the refugees’ haven. Dalinar bonds the Stormfather as a Bondsmith, speaking the Second Ideal to unite instead of divide. Renarin reveals that he is a Truthwatcher, his eyes now healed. Adolin, snapped by rage after Sadeas threatens to continue his destructive politicking, murders the highprince in a dark corridor. And far away, Jasnah—who survived the assassination by Elsecalling into Shadesmar—returns to the physical realm, guided by Wit, just as the Everstorm sweeps across Roshar, awakening the parshmen as Voidbringers.

Chapter-by-Chapter Table
Common Questions
1. What is the Everstorm and how does it change the world?
The Everstorm is a malignant, red-lightning highstorm summoned by the Parshendi in stormform. It blows from west to east, opposite of normal highstorms. After it first passes, it awakens every parshman on Roshar, turning them into Voidbringers—thus ending the long peace and inaugurating the True Desolation.
2. Does Jasnah Kholin really die?
No. Jasnah survives the assassination attempt by Elsecalling into Shadesmar just before the killing blow. She spends the latter half of the book navigating the Cognitive Realm and returns in the epilogue, guided by Wit.
3. What are the three Ideals Kaladin swears?
Kaladin speaks the First Ideal of the Knights Radiant (“Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination”) before the series begins. In Words of Radiance, he swears the Second Ideal (“I will protect those who cannot protect themselves”) and finally, at the climax, the Third Ideal: “I will protect even those I hate, so long as it is right.”
4. How does Shallan discover Urithiru?
By mapping the entire Shattered Plains and recognizing the symmetrical, radial pattern of plateaus. She deduces that the pattern was created by a destructive force and that the Oathgate lies at the exact center, beneath the Parshendi city of Narak (ancient Stormseat). She activates it using Pattern as a living Shardblade key.
5. Who are the Ghostbloods and what is their role?
A secret society of spies, assassins, and informants operating across Roshar. They are led by Mraize and guided by Master Thaidakar. They seek knowledge of Urithiru and the Radiants, often through violence—they ordered Jasnah’s murder. Shallan infiltrates them to protect her family and learn their secrets.
6. Why does Adolin kill Sadeas?
After the battle of Narak, Sadeas corners Adolin in Urithiru and boasts that he will continue to undermine and destroy House Kholin, guaranteeing a civil war. Adolin, physically and emotionally shattered, snaps and stabs Sadeas through the eye with a knife, hiding the body.
7. What happens to Szeth at the end?
Szeth duels Kaladin in the skies above the Shattered Plains. When he realizes his oath as Truthless was a lie, he stops parrying and allows Kaladin’s Syl-blade to kill him. Nale (Darkness) later resurrects him, takes away his Honorblade, and gives him Nightblood, recruiting him as a Skybreaker candidate.
8. What is the significance of the Oathgate?
The Oathgate is a massive fabrial portal that provides instantaneous travel between the Shattered Plains and the tower city of Urithiru. Shallan’s activation of it saves the Alethi armies from the converging Everstorm and highstorm and establishes Urithiru as the new Radiant stronghold.
