The Support Group and Adrienne's Death

The novel opens with an epigraph defining final girl as the last and sole survivor of a horror movie. Lynnette Tarkington wakes and completes an intensive exercise routine—knee strikes, palm heel strikes, elbow strikes, and a treadmill run—before remembering she might die that day. She learns that six Camp Red Lake counselors were murdered, and sixteen-year-old Stephanie Fugate survived by shoving the killer from a hayloft. Lynnette prepares for her monthly support group meeting in a Burbank church basement, the only regular outing she makes. Six final girls remain in the group, with a seventh, Chrissy, excluded as a traitor.

At the meeting, tensions flare. Dani announces she is leaving the group, and arguments erupt.
