The chapter opens with Issy entering a room and discovering her mother, Christina, alone and wearing a VR headset and earbuds. Christina is completely unaware of her daughter's presence. Issy watches as Christina makes repetitive hand and arm movements in short, sharp bursts, clearly engaged in some activity within the Metaverse.
Issy's reaction is immediate and visceral. Seeing her mother in this unguarded state triggers her fight-or-flight instinct, and she clutches the knife she's carrying more tightly. She realizes she's never seen her mother so vulnerable and unobserved.
Issy moves closer, step by step, until she's within striking distance. She considers two possible attacks: a clean cut to the throat or a stab to the heart.
