Summary

Liam arrives at the distillery on demolition day, greeted by the sight of backhoes, dump trucks, and wrecking balls lined up in the parking lot. He had met with Ed McBain and authorized the demolition after concluding he wouldn't meet the trust's terms. Joe greets him from his usual spot on the front steps and asks about Daisy. Liam admits the relationship ended, and when Joe offers to introduce him to a niece, Liam declines, saying there's only one woman for him.

Inside the visitor center, Brendan is speaking with the contractor. Jaxon runs to greet Liam and asks to see the distillery again, hoping to see his name and fly a plane in the stills. Brendan sends Jaxon outside with Joe for a last look. Liam and Brendan pour themselves a final drink from the open bottles. Brendan assures Liam the employees will be taken care of with the proceeds from the sale.

The conversation turns tense when Brendan brings up Liam leaving town with their mother. Liam explains what happened that night: their mother had given him money to rent a tuxedo for prom, and when the rental store couldn't reach him, they called the house. Brendan admits he resented Liam for doing what he couldn't do and for getting out when Brendan knew he'd have to go back and help run the company. Liam admits he resented Brendan for doing nothing to stop their father and for leaving for college. Brendan reveals he did try to protect them in small ways: hiding bottles, watering down liquor, taking keys, getting their mother out of the house, and trying to talk their father down.

Then Brendan delivers the revelation that changes everything: their father didn't think Liam was worthless—he envied him. Their grandfather had told their father that Liam was a better man, more worthy of the legacy at thirteen, and intended to leave the distillery to him. That's what set off the night their father broke Liam's arm. Liam realizes the worth he'd been chasing all his life had been inside him all along.

Joe interrupts with alarming news: Jaxon is missing. They search the grounds frantically. A tremendous crash signals the rickhouse wall collapsing. Brendan panics, fearing Jaxon is inside. Liam runs to the bulldozer, waves the driver to stop, and races into the partially fallen building. He knows instantly where to find his nephew—at the back, behind the old Murphy cask.

Jaxon is crouched there, carving Brendan's name into the cask that bears the names of all the Murphy men.
