Summary
Chapter Eight opens in the early afternoon at Havenfield, where Ro yanks Sophie out of a restless sleep. Ro has spent her morning making a statement: she has dyed her own hair and Iggy's fur in matching ombré shades of purple, blue, and gray, a look Sophie privately compares to the night sky before stars appear. The change is deliberate—Ro explains she wants to show Sophie they will not sit around moping about boys or worrying about the Neverseen's retaliation. For Sophie, though, the new color carries a sting: it erases the final gift Keefe gave Iggy, and she has to fight back tears.
Ro also reveals she has been snooping and found a charm bracelet from Valin, a former Foxfire classmate who gave it to Sophie as a midterms gift back when she was a Level Two. Sophie admits she had completely forgotten about him and has not seen him since her kidnapping. Ro teases her about the competition among her admirers, but the moment is cut short when Edaline arrives with a tray of fresh sweetberry swirls.
Sophie immediately shares the secret she has been carrying: Lady Gisela is a Conjurer. She explains that Lord Cassius showed her a memory Gisela had tried hard to erase, in which Gisela conjured something and admitted she has been hiding the ability. Edaline freezes at the news and then walks Sophie through how conjuring actually works. Everything is connected by invisible energy strings, and Conjurers tug on those ties with their minds, dragging objects back and forth through the void—but they must be able to visualize exactly where something is, or they cannot move it. Conjuring also only works on inanimate objects; nothing living can be conjured.
Ro immediately sees the tactical implications. Gisela could conjure weapons or explosives at any moment, anywhere—including inside Havenfield, despite the goblin patrols. Sophie's mind spirals through worst-case scenarios, and she curls into a self-soothing position she privately calls a Sophie-ball. Edaline tries to reassure her that none of the Neverseen's attacks have involved explosives, but Ro counters that this does not mean they are not saving that trick for a grand finale.
Sophie reasons that Gisela must be planning something huge—something only a Conjurer could do—and that it must need to happen at a specific moment. Otherwise, she would have revealed the ability long ago. Sophie lists missed opportunities: Gisela could have conjured a weapon on Mount Everest, defended herself from Brant and Fintan, escaped the ogre prison sooner, or conjured the Archetype puzzle pieces instead of sending Keefe on a dangerous quest. Edaline pushes back gently, noting that conjuring can drain tremendous energy and that Gisela may simply not be in the habit of using an ability she has hidden for decades. Sophie concedes the point but insists Gisela is too calculating to hide the ability without a reason.
Ro then coaches Edaline through an exercise: close her eyes, tilt her chin up, pull her hair back tight, and try to embody Gisela—to think like an evil, murdering psychopath. Ro presses on, describing Gisela's treatment of Keefe: treating him like an experiment, planning and manipulating him before he was even born, lying to his face, erasing his memories, and finally strapping him to a dwarven throne to be blasted by shadows and light.
