Summary

Nisha arrives at the Bentley Hotel to meet Carl, who is finishing a business conversation. She waits deliberately, aware of his power games. Charlotte is present, and Nisha insists she leave. Carl presents a separation agreement dated six months earlier, claiming Nisha signed it in St. Tropez. Nisha denies this, but the document bears a signature resembling hers. The settlement offers a two-bedroom apartment up to $1.5 million, Ray's college fees, and a monthly payment of $10,000 until Ray leaves college. Nisha recognizes this is far below what she could claim, but Carl insists it's fair, citing company debts.

Jasmine, posing as a maid, examines the papers and warns Nisha that the sum is trivial compared to Carl's real wealth. Meanwhile, Sam arrives breathlessly, having recognized Carl from a video she received earlier. She shows Nisha a video of Carl with Charlotte, which she has already sent to Nisha's phone. Nisha realizes this is her bargaining chip.

Despite Sam's urging to use the video to demand a larger settlement, Nisha instead instructs Carl to transfer the offered amount into Sam's bank account. She signs the documents, hands over the shoes (which she had repaired with a craft gun), and then reveals she has the video, warning Carl to leave her, Ray, and her friends alone or she will release it. She also delivers a cutting remark to Charlotte about her fashion sense.

Outside, Nisha explains to Sam that she rejected a larger settlement because she didn't want to become as corrupt as Carl. She then directs Sam to drive past a traffic officer, where she reports Carl's car (registration PYF 483V) for carrying smuggled diamonds hidden in the heels of the shoes. The officer radios it in. Nisha notes that since she is now divorced, she can testify against him. The chapter ends with Jasmine and Sam laughing, and Nisha smiling, having turned the tables.

Character Development

Nisha undergoes a profound transformation in this chapter. Initially, she appears vulnerable, with butterflies in her stomach, but she maintains composure. She recognizes Carl's manipulation—the forged signature, the pre-planned settlement—and feels defeated. However, when Sam brings the video, Nisha gains leverage. Instead of using it for financial gain, she chooses integrity over revenge. She rejects a larger settlement, stating she doesn't want to be as disgusting as Carl. This decision marks a shift from materialism to self-respect and freedom. She also demonstrates strategic thinking by reporting the diamonds, ensuring Carl faces consequences without directly implicating herself. Her final line,
