Summary

With Jasmine off work for several days, Nisha works her hotel shifts alone, simmering with anger and guilt. She is furious at Carl for destroying her life, but also guilty about something she nearly did to Jasmine in the previous chapter—a moment that still haunts her. She completes her cleaning duties in a silent fury, scowling at guests and pretending she can't speak English to avoid complaints.

Her attempts to secure legal help fail. She calls six top divorce lawyers in New York; only three take her call, and two say they've already been retained by Carl. Her bank relationship manager, Jeff, promises to call back but never does. When she tries to get a credit card, the application is rejected because she has no permanent UK address, and the US company will only send the card to her New York home—which Carl now controls.

She phones her son Ray every day, but only talks about trivial things—his lunch, his roommate, his nail-biting—because she can't bring herself to tell him what has happened to their family. She fears hurting him when she can't be there to comfort him, especially so soon after
