Summary
Kyr wakes before dawn in the apartment she shares with Mags, Ursa, and Ally. She watches Mags sleep and briefly allows herself to imagine that he might find happiness on Chrysothemis. She dresses quietly, takes the yellow waterproof from the hook, and sits at the table where Ally's art supplies are scattered. For a moment she considers staying—going to school, becoming part of this family—but the thought of the dead, the Sparrows, and the war still being fought in deep space hardens her resolve. She knows her duty and rejects the life she could have here.
Ally interrupts her thoughts. He notices the waterproof and asks if she's going for a run, then directly asks if she's running away. When she doesn't answer, he threatens to wake his mother. Kyr, who could easily overpower him, forces herself to stay calm. She asks him not to wake anyone, and he makes her promise to come back. She lies and promises, then leaves.
The streets are thick with morning mist. Kyr walks past the memorial statue of a woman cradling Earth, deliberately avoiding looking at it. She passes cleaners, a majo with an animal, and a group of young women, but she keeps moving. She reaches the tin-roofed shack in the slums where she, Avi, and Yiso had been hiding. The lock doesn't work, so she forces the door open. The shack is empty—no food, no clothes, no sign of Avi or Yiso. She checks under the sink where she had hidden the field knife and handgun taken from the Victrix, along with the wing badge. All gone.
The landlord appears, and Kyr confronts him. She twists his wrist until he admits that Avi and Yiso left, that he sold the uniform, and that he kept the badge. She tears the Victrix Wing sigil from his lapel and pins it inside her pocket. She threatens him, telling him she'll kill him if he calls anyone. The landlord cowers, and Kyr leaves.
As she walks, she plans her next move. She remembers the name Leru Ihenni Tan Yi, the Prince of the Wisdom, who is coming to Chrysothemis. She recalls that there is a dormant Wisdom node near the archaeological settlement of Hfa, reachable by following a light railway line east from Raingold. She decides to go there, wait for the prince, and kill him—even if it means her own death. She expects to die, and she feels light, almost free. She walks to the water's edge, kicks at the algal bloom, and stands looking out at the ocean. She imagines what it might be like to be Ally, to grow up on a world of water and rain, but she dismisses it as a distraction. She fingers the Victrix insignia in her pocket and reaffirms her purpose.

Character Development
Kyr is the focus of this chapter. Her internal conflict between duty and the possibility of a new life is laid bare. She briefly imagines staying, but the memory of the dead and her sense of obligation to the war effort override any personal desire. Her decision to lie to Ally shows her willingness to compromise her own integrity for what she sees as a greater cause. The chapter also reveals her capacity for violence—she mentally catalogues the ways she could kill Ally, the landlord, or even Mags—but she restrains herself, choosing to use only the minimum force necessary. Her plan to die in the assassination attempt underscores her martyrdom complex and her belief that her life is only valuable as a weapon for humanity.
Ally is a foil to Kyr. He is innocent, unafraid, and lives in a world without fear. His demand for a promise shows his trust in others, which Kyr exploits. He represents the normal life Kyr could have had, and his presence makes her rejection of that life more poignant.
The landlord is a minor but revealing character. He claims to be a patriot but has sold Gaean memorabilia and profited from the situation. His cowardice and greed contrast with Kyr's rigid sense of duty, highlighting the moral decay of the civilian population from Kyr's perspective.
