Summary
The chapter opens with Silas reflecting on the mood at camp as the wedding approaches. Most believe the wedding will end their problems, but Silas remains wary of Floria, whom she considers a tyrant rather than merely an overprotective mother. She wishes she could keep Creon and Lynia at camp forever, out of Floria's reach.
Creon has settled into daily life with Silas, Kodiak, and Baby Paula as if they've always been together. Mornings are spent in picnic-style breakfasts in the barn, surrounded by charms and wards Creon has hung to keep bugs and rodents away and to light up if someone enters. Creon gives Silas a green protection charm, explaining that smaller charms actually work better than larger ones—comparing it to the difference between a glass bead and a crystal vase.
