Summary

The chapter opens at the Kodiak family home, where Grandma and Ignatius share laughter in the living room. The narrator hands the baby to Silas, who immediately calms her; the infant shifts into her pup form and paws at his shirt, and Silas tucks her inside for warmth and safety. The narrator reflects on the image of Silas in the forest, determined and wild-eyed, searching for a way to save his sister—a memory that will stay with her for the rest of her life.

The narrator leads Silas into the dining room, where Grandma has set out a tea and coffee tray with cookies and other snacks for the meeting.
