Summary

The chapter opens in the late afternoon as Tobias drives Iris away from the Kitt estate. The city of Oath is unnaturally quiet for what should be its busiest hour. Streets are empty, litter gathers at curbs, stores have closed early, and flowers have been placed in windowsills for the chancellor, who remains hospitalized after the assassination attempt. Residents walk with coats belted tight and worry in their eyes, locking doors against a war that Iris knows cannot be kept out by thresholds.

Iris carries a folded paper in her pocket: Dacre's dictated speech, which she typed under his watchful eye. The god has commanded her to publish his ultimatum on the front page of tomorrow's Inkridden Tribune. The speech threatens to bomb the southern side of Oath at noon unless residents cross the river to the northern side, where his soldiers will welcome and shield them. Those who refuse and remain south of the river, he warns, must face the consequences of their actions.

When Tobias parks at the print factory, Iris asks him to fetch Helena from the Inkridden Tribune office. She enters the lobby alone and requests an audience with Digby Lawrence, the head printer. The receptionist, Greta, refuses her last-minute edit request, insisting that appointments must be scheduled for the following day.
