Short Summary
Reckless picks up immediately after the events of Powerless. Paedyn Gray, the Silver Savior, is recovering from her fight with the king, who revealed that a prince killed her father years before. She discovers her father's Healer journal and plans to flee to Dor. Kai Azer, now the Enforcer, is ordered by his brother King Kitt to bring her back alive. He burns down her house, but she escapes. The novel follows their cat-and-mouse chase across the Scorches desert, their encounters in Dor's underground fighting ring, and the revelations about the king's conspiracy against Ordinaries. As they are forced together, their hatred and attraction intensify. Eventually, they are captured, escape, and learn the truth about Paedyn's origins. They return to Ilya, where Kitt announces he will marry Paedyn, leaving Kai to watch from the crowd.
Full Summary
Reckless opens with Kai walking through the empty castle halls early in the morning, enjoying rare solitude. He enters the kitchen, where Gail is baking a sticky bun, as she does every year on this day. They talk about his visit to his brother Kitt's study, where Kitt informed Kai of his first mission as Enforcer—a mission involving a woman. Gail asks whether Kitt remembered the significance of the day; Kai says it is not Kitt's job to remember. Gail gives him the sticky bun, and Kai heads through the gardens to a willow tree beyond the lawn. He sits beneath the tree, places the sticky bun on a root, and lights a match as a substitute candle. He wishes a happy birthday to someone he calls A, then blows out the flame. This ritual is for his deceased sister Ava, whose memory shapes his grief and tenderness throughout the novel.
Meanwhile, Paedyn, wounded from her fight with the king, has spent three days recovering in her childhood home in Loot. The king revealed that her first encounter with a prince occurred years before she saved Kai in the alley, and that this prince killed her father. Searching the floorboards, she finds a hidden compartment containing weapons and her father's Healer journal. She packs supplies, planning to flee Ilya for Dor across the Scorches. Noticing the streets are unusually quiet, she realizes something is wrong. Five Imperials break through the door, led by the Enforcer, Kai Azer. Paedyn hides in the chimney. Kai speaks aloud, uncertain of her presence, mentioning the head start he gave her and his search for courage. The Imperials search and find nothing, then leave. Kai remains briefly before setting the house on fire.
Kai exits the burning house, and the chase begins. He spots a silver-haired figure on the roof and orders his Imperials to capture her. She escapes by leaping across rooftops. Kai throws a knife, striking her thigh, and she falls but manages to disappear. He discovers a dead Imperial with a throwing knife in his chest and decides to bury the soldier, a gesture of compassion that Paedyn witnesses from a rooftop. She considers killing him but hesitates, and he carries the body away. Paedyn then crosses the Scorches desert on foot, enduring dehydration, hallucinations, and nightmares of her friend Adena's death. She resolves not to hesitate again when she next faces the Enforcer.
Kai, meanwhile, returns to the castle to report to King Kitt, who has become increasingly unkempt and paranoid. Kitt questions Kai's loyalty, recalling past disobedience when Kai spared children by banishing Ordinaries with their families. Kitt worries Kai's feelings for the girl could lead him to defy orders. Both claim their feelings for her died when she killed their father, though both are lying. Kai pledges loyalty and removes his Enforcer ring, placing it on Kitt's desk until he earns back Kitt's trust. Kitt orders him to bring her back alive.
Paedyn reaches Dor, where she hides her silver hair with a scarf and takes on the alias
