Short Summary

In the kingdom of Ilya, where magical ability determines worth, Adena, a Phaser seamstress from the slums, is drawn into a dangerous plan by Makoto, a blacksmith who hides his true identity as a Wielder. Makoto wants to rescue his cousin Hera from the brutal Purging Trials, and he needs Adena's power to do it. As they work together, they fall in love, but their secret is threatened by the king's cruelty. When Adena is summoned to the castle to serve as Paedyn's seamstress, she discovers Makoto's deception and feels betrayed. They reconcile, but tragedy strikes: Hera dies in the first Trial, and Adena is later imprisoned and tortured. In the final Trial, the king places Adena in the arena as the criminal to be killed. Paedyn, the Silver Savior, finds her, but Adena is fatally pierced by a branch. She dies counting stars, leaving Makoto heartbroken. The novel ends with Adena watching over her loved ones from the afterlife, and a teaser for the sequel, Reckless.

Full Summary

Powerless opens with a prologue set five years before the main events. A young Adena, a Phaser, flees through a market after clumsily stealing a sticky bun. She runs into a silver-haired girl, Paedyn, and they escape together. They become partners: Adena sews, Paedyn steals, and they share everything. This friendship becomes the bedrock of Adena's life.

The main story begins in the slums of Loot, where Makoto, a blacksmith, watches the celebration for the sixth Purging Trials. He sees the list of the dead, which includes his cousin Hera, a Defensive Elite chosen for the Trials. Makoto is consumed by guilt, believing he should have been the one to die. He spots the Silver Savior (Paedyn) boarding a coach, and also notices a seamstress—Adena—waving at Paedyn. Makoto recognizes Adena from a prior encounter and begins to form a plan.

Adena, meanwhile, wakes alone in the Fort she shares with Paedyn, who has entered the Trials. She goes to sell clothes and steals a sticky bun, but is chased by a merchant and an Imperial. A stranger phases through a wall to save her—it's Makoto, who reveals he is a Phaser (or so he claims). He asks for her help: he wants to sneak into the castle to see Hera, and he needs Adena to make him an Imperial disguise. They agree to work together, and Adena gives her name; he says to call him Mak.

Over the next few days, Adena and Makoto grow closer. She teaches him to sew, he teaches her to throw a punch. They exchange banter and share sticky buns. Makoto is gruff and self-deprecating, but Adena's warmth begins to break through his walls. He reveals he has a scar on his lip from his abusive father, and that he ran away from home with Hera when he was fourteen. Adena shares that her mother died of sickness and she's lived on the streets for five years with Paedyn. They develop a deep bond, and Makoto gives her a nickname,
