Summary
The chapter opens with Isaiah driving Kennedy back to his apartment in complete silence after the confrontation at the field. He is emotionally drained, replaying the hallway argument in his head and regretting every word he said. He admits to himself that he snapped because he saw a man who looked like the kind of rich asshole Kennedy's parents would have forced her to marry, and the sight triggered his deep fear of being left behind. He reflects on the upcoming season: Kai is retiring, and Kennedy is flying out tomorrow for a job interview that everyone expects her to get. Isaiah confesses that he is tired of people he cares about not sticking around, and that he took his frustration out on her because she is leaving him too.
When they arrive, Kennedy takes charge. She gets out of the car, opens his door, and leads him into his apartment as if she has been there countless times.
