Summary

The chapter opens with Ophelia noting that Lindsay and Talia are both absent due to colds, which spares her from immediate confrontation but leaves her with a more pressing task: telling Lucas she is backing out of prom. She catches him at his locker, and after he dismisses his friends, she bluntly says she can't go with him. Lucas initially laughs, thinking she's joking, but when he realizes she's serious, he reacts with disbelief and anger, accusing her of being unpredictable and mocking her earlier enthusiasm. Ophelia stands her ground, reflecting that she deserves someone who makes her feel special, and that she won't settle for a date that doesn't mean something to her. She acknowledges she's being unfair to Lucas but knows this is the right choice for herself. He storms off, muttering insults.

Later, Sammie drives Ophelia home. She confronts him about calling her a coward the other night. Sammie pulls over and apologizes, explaining that he's liked Lindsay since he was thirteen but never had the courage to tell her. He admits he resented Ophelia and Wesley because Wesley had the guts to pursue Lindsay, and he took his frustration out on Ophelia. He offers a sincere apology, saying she's never been a coward. Ophelia accepts, and they reconcile. She apologizes for not telling him the truth about her feelings for Talia, but Sammie insists she doesn't need to apologize for that—she should only apologize for things like calling him Samuel or forgetting his dietary restrictions. She then tells him he still owes Wesley an apology, and he groans but agrees. They talk about Lindsay and Wesley's relationship; Sammie admits he's heartbroken but also feels a sense of relief and freedom to explore new possibilities in college.

Back home, Ophelia and Wesley work on making corsages and boutonnieres for prom. Ophelia has chosen specific roses for each friend: Honor roses for Lindsay and Wesley, Keepsakes for Agatha, Tequila Sunrise for Sammie, and Lady X roses for herself. She reflects that her garden has survived despite her neglect, and she's okay with that. Wesley helps with the bows, and they chat about prom predictions. Ophelia says she expects Lindsay to win prom queen, Agatha and Sammie to be the best dancers, and Talia and Zaq to be the best dressed. She also says she'll be the best friend she hasn't been lately. Wesley reminds her she's allowed to be imperfect. She mentions that Sammie has an apology coming his way, and Wesley, with a mischievous grin, shouts over the fence to catch Sammie eavesdropping. Sammie mutters a curse and runs off, and Ophelia and Wesley laugh together.
