Opening: Prom Season and a Troubling Attraction

Ophelia Rojas is a rose-loving high school senior who has always thought of herself as a hopeless romantic. The novel opens with Ophelia at her locker with friends Agatha and Lindsay, discussing prom. At lunch, Agatha texts Ophelia a five-dollar bet that Lindsay will choose Wesley as a prom date before graduation. In government class, Talia Sanchez arrives, and Ophelia reacts with noticeable nervousness. A flashback recounts Lindsay's end-of-summer party, where a game of Never Have I Ever led Jackie Mitchell to admit she had kissed a girl, and Talia discreetly lowered a finger while looking at Ophelia. Since then, Ophelia has felt unsettled by her attention to Talia.

Friendship, Family, and the Approach of Prom

Agatha tries to persuade Lindsay to run for prom queen, and Ophelia jokes she would run if prom were Hamlet-themed. Ophelia needs a ride to her graduation photos and texts Talia, who agrees. At the photo studio, Talia helps Ophelia with a stuck zipper on her daisy-print dress. They go to Ollas Amarillas, a Cuban restaurant, where Talia tries Cuban food for the first time. Talia's cousin makes pointed comments about Talia wearing a suit to prom, and Talia explains her family's traditional views. They discuss tattoos, names, and identity. Ophelia explains her mother's love of Shakespeare inspired her name.

Ophelia comforts Sammie, who is upset about his nondate with Lindsay. She suggests inviting Talia and Zaq to prom pictures. On Sunday, Ophelia gardens her roses, a peaceful routine. Her mother interrupts, and they exchange lines from poems by William Blake and William Carlos Williams. Her mother brings up Ophelia's future husband and children, calling her
