Summary
Bree regains consciousness in a small, dark underground cell with dirt floors and concrete-block walls, her head throbbing from a lump at her hairline. Mariah, Zoe, and Nick are with her, and the group is trapped behind a row of iron floor-to-ceiling bars. Zoe and Nick are attacking the bars in a desperate attempt to break free. Mariah explains that Lawson knocked Bree and Nick out, then captured Mariah and Zoe after Mariah ran out of gas. Bree has been unconscious for about half an hour, and her and Zoe's overnight bags are still nearby, which at least means Zoe has access to her medication.
As the group processes their imprisonment, a figure shrouded in dark green aether appears beyond the bars. Zoe assumes it is Lawson and snarls at him, but the voice shifts from Lawson's low baritone to a more familiar tone, and the green aether transforms into a crackling black cloud. Out of that cloud steps Erebus Varelian, revealing that he has been disguised as Lawson the entire time. Zoe is furious, but Bree is stunned into silence as she realizes that every moment of the past three days—the ward trapping them in Penumbra, the mistaken identities, the library, the communions, the confessions—happened while the Shadow King watched.
Erebus explains that he was investigating the Regents for the increasing number of Merlin deaths. When Nick suggested at his curia that the Morgaines were likely suspects, the Regents—Aldrich, Gabriel, and Cestra—began meeting in undisclosed locations at odd hours, refusing to share their whereabouts with their Seneschals. Erebus suspected they were pursuing the Morgaines themselves, but he had no proof, and Morgaines are notoriously difficult to find. So he created the Lawson alias to investigate back channels.
The investigation took a turn when Bree questioned him about warlock mercenaries and kidnapped Rootcrafters, and Elijah reported a rumor that Erebus's crown had been stolen by a warlock from the Morgaines. Erebus realized the pieces were connected. He barred the twins and Bree from seeking out Daeza, knowing that the restriction would motivate them to do exactly that. Daeza connected the crown to Mikael and the Collectors' Gala, and Erebus used the Lawson identity to monitor and move events along.
Erebus reveals that he could not retrieve the crown himself because he cannot trick a Morgaine enchantment—he needed a Morgaine to remove the lock placed on it. He sent Bree and Zoe as his agents, knowing they could touch the crown when he could not, as a safeguard in case a Morgaine never appeared. Ava did appear but escaped before he could trap her, leaving the crown behind. Erebus convinced Santiago to secure it on his behalf.
The true prize, Erebus says, is information. He gained insight into the Regents' plans and discovered that they are not only pursuing Morgaines but also targeting Rootcrafters. He notes that taking a Rootcrafter captive instead of killing them outright is nearly unprecedented in Order history, and he asserts that true ancestral power lies with those who craft root, not with the Scions the Regents praise. Bree rejects his framing, insisting that Rootcrafters are people, not prey.
Erebus also reveals that he was testing the loyalty of his most powerful protégés, and he praises Bree and Zoe. Zoe confronts him about Elijah, pointing out that Erebus tricked and used him. Erebus dismisses the concern, saying Elijah's desire to please him limits his growth—he wishes to be strengthened, not pleased. Bree insists that she and Zoe came for the missing girls, not for the crown, but Erebus counters that she did it for herself. He tells her her next lesson is to become ruthless. When Bree declares she will never be what he is, Erebus replies that she will become something much more fascinating.
Shadows creep in around Erebus's ankles as he announces he must attend to the matter of the Regents and the Rootcrafters with urgency. He leaves Bree, Zoe, Nick, and Mariah imprisoned, noting that the prison is designed to hold demons and they will not be able to break out—but he invites them to try.

Character Development
Bree moves through several emotional states in this chapter: confusion upon waking, stunned realization as Erebus's deception unfolds, and finally defiant resistance. Her insistence that she and Zoe came for the missing girls, not the crown, shows her moral compass holding firm even when confronted with the Shadow King's manipulation. Her declaration that she will never be what Erebus is marks a clear line in the sand, even as his ominous reply suggests he sees greater potential in her.
Zoe reacts with immediate fury at the revelation, clenching the bars and shouting at Erebus. Her anger is personal—she feels betrayed by someone she trusted as a mentor. Her confrontation about Elijah shows her protective instincts extend beyond herself and Bree to others in Erebus's orbit.
Nick demonstrates his characteristic sharp wit even in captivity, mocking Erebus's lack of progress in reuniting his Shadow Court and using the name
