Summary
The chapter opens with Bree waking to the sound of the shower running. She notices that Nick slept on the chaise lounge rather than sharing her large bed, and that he arranged quilts and small pillows to make the makeshift bed more comfortable. He also drew the heavy curtains closed to block the morning light—a quiet, thoughtful gesture that Bree recognizes as the kind of care she has treasured since her mother's death. She briefly lets herself imagine what it would feel like to have such safety and comfort all the time, but a knock at the door pulls her back to reality.
A clothing delivery arrives from Mikael's staff. Before answering, Bree slips on her masquerade mask and prepares a small ball of root in her palm, ready to defend herself. The delivery person is a distracted young man with a cart of garment bags labeled by room number. Nick joins her at the door, freshly showered, and handles the exchange while Bree steps out of sight. After locking the door, Nick points out that Bree's defensive reaction—jumping when his shoulder nearly brushed hers—is a problem. He explains that they need to practice touching each other to convincingly maintain their fake engagement cover, since they are new guests and likely under surveillance.
Nick and Bree rehearse physical contact. He starts slowly, wrapping his fingers around her forearm, then cupping her elbow, then standing close so his torso brushes against her. He gives her time to move away at each step. Bree gradually relaxes, and Nick invites her to touch him back. When she places her palms on his chest, she notices the scent of cedar, ozone, and petrichor—a magical signature she recognizes from the storage room the night before. Nick asks her what was done to her, referencing her memory loss, but Bree cannot answer.
Nick then describes what he felt when they first met: watching her walk across the quad, wanting to experience her up close, and feeling that kissing her was like standing at the edge of a cliff—not to jump, but to feel what it means to stand at the infinite. Bree completes his thought, understanding the metaphor of the fall. But Nick quickly closes off, setting a firm boundary: he will only touch or kiss her to maintain the lie, and only in the way they practiced. Bree hears the unspoken message—their connection is over, and when she and Zoe leave, all the doors she is teasing open with Nick will close.
Later, dressed for the day, Nick advises Bree on lying: the most realistic version of a truth rolls off the tongue more smoothly than a complete fabrication. He notes that she already did this with Zoe, telling her who she is without revealing her Bloodcrafter or Rootcrafter abilities. They discuss Selwyn. Nick explains that after leaving the Order, he exploited a formal protocol loophole to go on a quest of his own choosing, searching for Bree and Sel. He sought out Ava and the Morgaines, hoping they knew what happened, but Ava had no leads either. Nick describes Selwyn as mercurial, moody, strong, talented, opinionated, dedicated, and terrifying when he wants to be.
