Summary

Kiara comes home to find her younger brother Trevor alone in her apartment, dancing in his boxers to a Backstreet Boys song. He tells her that Alé dropped him off about an hour ago and said she'd call. Kiara checks her phone and sees a missed call from Alé. She steps into the kitchen to call back.

Alé answers, her voice strained. She explains that the authorities called the family to identify what they thought was Clara's body, but it turned out to be another young woman, beaten and dead. Alé says her mother is a mess, she has to run the restaurant, and she can't keep Trevor anymore. She tells Kiara she doesn't know how to be around her right now, because Kiara chose the life she's living while Clara didn't get a choice. Then she hangs up.

Kiara tries to push aside the hurt and focuses on Trevor. He asks to make pancakes. They use M&M's because there are no chocolate chips. Trevor pours too much batter into the pan, creating a giant pancake. While they're cooking, Vernon, the building manager, knocks. He asks about Dee and says he's collecting rent. He warns Kiara that his job protocol requires him to alert authorities to any neglect of a minor. Kiara deflects, saying Dee will be back soon. After Vernon leaves, the pancake has burned on the outside while the center is still liquid. Kiara and Trevor try to flip it together, but it splits in two, charred side up.

Trevor is upset, but Kiara tries to comfort him, saying syrup will make it taste fine. Trevor retorts that she's always saying she'll fix things but they're still in the same place. He asks if his mother is coming back. Kiara says she doesn't know. He asks where Marcus is; Kiara says he's in jail. Trevor asks if his mother is in jail too; Kiara says no. He asks again if she's coming back, and Kiara tells him she doesn't think so. Trevor lies back, staring at the ceiling.

Later, after Trevor falls asleep, Kiara dials the phone number she promised Purple Suit she would call. Marsha Fields answers, and Kiara starts talking, letting the words out.
