Summary

Waking up in Hades's bathtub after a tense night, Persephone takes stock of her situation with brutal clarity. She has no resources, no allies who would defy her mother, and no way to survive the three months until her twenty-fifth birthday, when she can access her trust fund and escape Olympus. She briefly considers asking her sisters for help, especially Callisto, but dismisses the idea, knowing they would face consequences for aiding her. Convinced there is no other option, she decides she must convince Hades to help her.

The morning light does nothing to soften Hades's forbidding appearance. Dressed in an expensive black suit, he seems like a figure of midnight itself. Persephone, trying to ignore his intimidating presence, opens the negotiation by pointing out his hatred for Zeus. Hades confirms his hatred, revealing that Zeus killed his parents when he was very young. He explains the political reality: a carefully constructed treaty among the Thirteen prevents both him and Zeus from crossing between the upper and lower cities, as doing so would trigger a war. This is why Zeus cannot simply come to retrieve her.

Persephone sees an opportunity. She proposes a plan: Hades should
