Summary

Chapter 12 opens with Persephone expecting Hades to keep her confined to his house, but instead he leads her to the front door, where a pair of sheepskin boots and a large trench-coat-style jacket wait for her. He calls this a compromise—he knows she will not allow herself to be carried through the streets, so he outfits her for the cold instead. Persephone is struck by the tenderness of the gesture: the king of the lower city, the boogeyman of Olympus, is taking care of her.

When they step outside, Persephone is surprised by the neighborhood. The street is clean, filled with ordinary businesses—a laundromat, two restaurants, a corner grocery store—and people who move with an ease she has never known. No one stares at Hades or her; no paparazzi lurk. She realizes she has never crossed the River Styx before, and the divide between upper and lower city suddenly feels strange to her. She asks Hades to show her around, and after a moment of hesitation, he agrees to a short walk.

As they walk, Persephone asks how he met Hermes and Dionysus. Hades explains that Hermes ambushed him—she appeared in his kitchen, eating his food, and has kept getting past his security ever since. Dionysus became a familiar presence through their overlapping work in distribution, and later began showing up socially as well. Persephone reflects on what she knows of the two: Hermes is a technical genius who handles security for the upper city, and Dionysus is a jack-of-all-trades in entertainment, parties, and illicit pleasures. She also notes that her mother has always kept her away from Dionysus, which feels ironic given Demeter's plan to sell her to Zeus.

Hades leads her to a warehouse district and through an unmarked door into a massive clothing warehouse. There, they meet Juliette, a Black woman of timeless beauty who was once the premier designer for Hera—the one two Heras ago.
