Midnight Black opens with Court Gentry in a Bucharest bar, haunted by the report that Zoya Zakharova was executed six months earlier. He whispers “She’s not dead” and prepares to kill five armed enemies. Six months earlier, in Romania’s Ferentari district, Court eliminates a ’Ndrangheta crew for the Balan Brigazi mob boss Dorin Balan, demanding passage to Russia. When Balan double-crosses him, Court survives a rooftop ambush using a dead man’s switch and Semtex, then forces Balan to reveal a ship, the Mygan, before executing him. Weeping from exhaustion and fear, Court drives toward Constanta.
The narrative shifts one month earlier. Former DEVGRU operator Zack Hightower is recruited by CIA officer Angela Lacy to assassinate GRU Lieutenant Colonel Karol Dvorak, who runs sabotage networks in Europe funded by oligarch Mikhail Sorkin’s New Russia Council. Hightower agrees after learning his friend Court has gone dark following Zoya’s reported death.
In Bogotá, Deputy Chief of Station Matthew Hanley learns of Court’s massacre in Romania and calls him.
