Summary
The chapter opens with Tyler demanding answers from Grey, who is unconscious in the car after the violent events at the hospital. He is shaken by what he witnessed—Grey killing a woman with a scalpel and the appearance of the bull-skulled man. Vivi defends Grey while Tyler insists on explanations. Iris tries to mediate, but the tension in the car remains thick.
The driver, still under Grey's spell, heads north on the highway. Iris notices the car smells of honey wine turning to vinegar, and the air is heavy with blood and invisible magic. She considers messaging their mother Cate but her phone dies before she can send anything.
Less than two hours after their escape, the car runs out of fuel near Northampton. The driver gets out and walks away, still spellbound, leaving the car door open. Tyler wanders into a field. Vivi and Iris tend to Grey, who is burning with fever. The driver eventually returns carrying a jerry can of fuel. Tyler tries to trip him, but the man barely reacts, continuing as if nothing happened.
