Summary

The chapter opens with Tyler spending the morning calling industry contacts to track down Yulia Vasylyk, a makeup artist with a large Instagram following who once lived with Grey. Tyler had worked with her before dating Grey, but she refused to style him once they got together. Meanwhile, Cate texts Iris about returning to school after the weekend, suggesting routine and normalcy help, but Iris doesn't respond.

Tyler eventually learns Yulia is at a photo shoot in a warehouse in Spitalfields. The three head there, with Tyler wearing sunglasses as a poor disguise. At the shoot, they find Yulia working on a model. She initially refuses to talk, and when Vivi tries to use her seductive abilities, Yulia slaps her hand away, calling her manipulative like her sister. Iris pleads with Yulia, promising they won't touch her, and Yulia agrees to answer questions while holding scissors for defense.

Yulia describes Grey as beautiful, secretive, quiet, and weird. She mentions Grey's taxidermy hobby—skinning mice, birds, and snakes to make Frankenstein-like creatures, which she used to pay rent before modeling money came in. It's covered in carrion flowers, the same white flowers that were growing in Vivi, the same ones Grey stitched into her gowns, the same ones found on the dead man and in their hair. Vivi identifies them as pyrophytes—plants adapted to tolerate fire, some needing fire to flourish. Iris connects this to the charred house in Edinburgh, the gunpowder heat of the bullet, the flames that engulfed Grey's apartment.

Vivi pulls out Grey's journal, which they kept from the police because it felt too sacred. The last Polaroid shows a doorway in a ruined stone wall covered in white flowers. The sketches are all of different doorways. Vivi explains that in Grey's fairy tale, you got to the Halfway—a liminal in-between place, limbo, the land of the dead—by walking through a broken door, a door that used to lead somewhere else.
