Summary
Lou regains consciousness to find herself trapped in darkness, stripped of every physical sense. She quickly realizes she is existing inside Nicholina le Clair's body — or, more precisely, that Nicholina has taken possession of her. Lou tries to provoke her captor with crude remarks about her body, hoping to get a reaction, but Nicholina remains silent. Lou pushes against the oppressive presence surrounding her, but it will not budge. Time has no meaning in this void, and Lou fears she may be trapped for centuries, eventually waking as a skeleton.
As Lou struggles to keep her emotions in check — she notes that feelings run wild and unchecked without a body to contain them — her thoughts turn to Reid, wondering if anyone has noticed she is no longer herself. This leads her to a deeper, more painful reflection: even before Nicholina's betrayal, Lou was already fractured. She thinks of Ansel, who died before his seventeenth birthday, and the wound his loss left in her spirit. She allowed Nicholina to slip into that crack, and the guilt consumes her. Etienne explains that Nicholina possessed him and led him to Morgane, who abducted and tortured him in a cave near the blood camp. Even after his death, Etienne remained trapped in Nicholina's consciousness, witnessing everything through her eyes — including his own desecrated body propped against Lou's tent, Morgane's kidnapping of Gabrielle, and Gabrielle's escape from the skull masquerade.
The voices piece together the full picture: Nicholina has trapped their souls in the darkness with her, and Lou is now one of them. They warn her that her soul will shatter, just as theirs have.
