Summary
The chapter opens mid-battle. Coco drags Lou behind a tree and slashes her own arm, coating the bark with blood mixed with stinging nettles. The moment Lou's back touches the trunk, the substance melts her armor and drives serrated branches through her hands and feet, lifting her into the air. Thorns shoot across her mouth, gagging her with poisoned tips. She cannot scream for help.
Nicholina pounces on Coco, punching her fist through Coco's rib cage toward her heart. Coco claws at Nicholina's wrist, then goes frighteningly still. Josephine's voice cuts through the night, ordering Nicholina to stop. Reluctantly, Nicholina withdraws her hand, and Coco collapses unconscious. Josephine then commands Nicholina to bring Lou's heart.
Nicholina takes a few steps toward Lou, but her body begins to spasm. She stumbles, crashes to her knees, and struggles to stand as her muscles riot against her. Josephine, disgusted, kicks Nicholina's ribs and strides toward Lou herself, intending to kill Lou with her own hands.
But Nicholina snaps—like a stray dog in the garbage that finally bites back. She plunges her nails into Josephine's calf. Josephine seizes Nicholina's hair, sinks her teeth into her throat, and tears out her vocal cords, drinking until Nicholina's body goes limp.
At that moment, the melusines arrive. Elvire sprints past with her trident, Aurélien fells Lou's tree with a single stroke of his club, and Lasimonne kneels to peel the thorns from Lou's mouth and draw the spikes from her hands and feet.
