Matthew Prior in Gallant: The Reluctant Guardian of the Gate

Overview

Matthew Prior is Olivia's cousin and the current master of Gallant, the estate that has stood for generations as a barrier between the living world and the shadow realm beyond the wall. He is introduced as a hostile, gaunt figure who burns the letter that summoned Olivia and insists she leave. But the novel gradually reveals that his cruelty is the armor of a young man crushed by an inherited duty: he is the last Prior standing at the gate, and he believes the family curse will only end when there are no Priors left.

Plot Role

Matthew functions as both gatekeeper and reluctant mentor. He is the one who explains the history of the wall to Olivia—the story of how the Priors forged an iron door, soaked it in their blood, and swore that nothing would cross without their blessing. He is also the one who tries to send her away, believing that her presence only gives the darkness another key to the prison.

His role shifts dramatically in the final chapters. When the master of the house steps through the gate into Gallant, Matthew becomes the last line of defense.
