Summary

The chapter opens with Olivia lying awake, exhausted from the day's work in the garden but unable to quiet her mind. As she watches her candle gutter on the bedside table, she hears the subtle creak of her bedroom door drifting open—even though she locked it. Bare feet whisper across the wood, and a body settles onto the other side of the bed.

When Olivia turns over, she finds a young woman sitting on the edge of the mattress. The woman is older than Olivia but not by much, with sun-kissed skin and ribbons of brown hair. As candlelight shifts across her face, Olivia recognizes the angles and lines from the portrait she saw that morning—the same features pressed into her own face. It is her mother, Grace Prior.

Grace smiles with mischief, at times looking like a girl, at other times a woman, depending on how the shadows cut across her face. She climbs onto the bed and curls herself beside Olivia like a mirror, reflecting the angles of her daughter's limbs. Her bare feet are stained with dirt, as if she has been running in the garden, but her hands are delicate and clean. She grazes the air over the bandage on Olivia's palm, worry flickering across her face, then lets her hand drift up to Olivia's cheek.

The touch is warm and gentle. Grace leans in and speaks Olivia's name three times, her voice low and soothing with a faint rasp, like the last words of a spell. And just like that, Olivia wakes up.

The candle has gone out. The room is pitch black, yet Olivia can see a ghoulish figure nestled in the bed where her mother had been—a rotting corpse, one hand still lifted toward her cheek. Olivia recoils, scrambles back, and tumbles off the edge of the bed, landing hard on the wooden floor. The pain clears her head, and when she surges to her feet, the ghoul is already gone.

Olivia lifts her good palm to her cheek, trying to hold onto her mother's touch, but she reminds herself that it only happened in the dream. The things she sees cannot touch her. They are not really there.

She finds matches and a fresh taper, lights a candle, and takes up her sketchpad and pencil. She begins to draw—not the ghoul, but the woman from her dream. Quick, rough lines capture not so much her mother's face but the softness of her touch, the sadness in her eyes, the way she said Olivia's name. Her pencil scratches across the paper, racing ahead of the fog, the forgetting.

She is halfway through the sketch when someone screams.

The scream is different from any she has heard before—not a child's shout or an injured howl, but a keening, shuddering sob. Olivia hurries to her door, panics for an instant when it holds, then remembers the small gold key. She plunges out into the hall and follows the sound to Matthew's room, where Hannah and Edgar are struggling to restrain him.

Matthew is thrashing in the bed, his eyes open but unseeing. He pleads,
