Summary

The chapter opens in the aftermath of violence. Eryk, a thirteen-year-old Grisha, lies on a stretcher, badly wounded, while the Ulle (the camp's chieftain) and Annika's father interrogate him about an attack. He claims six or seven raiders, speaking Ravkan, attacked him. His mother, Lena, cuts the questioning short. The Ulle wants to retaliate against a nearby village; Annika's father wants to evacuate. Eryk's mother insists on seeing to her son first.

The narrative then flashes back. Eryk and his mother are traveling up a mountain in the Elbjen range, heading toward a Grisha camp.
