Short Summary

Demon in the Wood follows Eryk, a thirteen-year-old Grisha who travels with his mother, Lena, to a remote northern camp. They plan to stay until the thaw. Eryk befriends sisters Annika and Sylvi, and when Lev, the Ulle's son, bullies them, Eryk uses his shadow powers to drive him off. Annika touches Eryk's hand and discovers he is an amplifier—a Grisha whose bones can enhance others' powers. She promises to keep his secret, but that night she lures him to a hot-spring pond to kill him for his bones. Lev arrives to claim Eryk for himself. In the struggle, Eryk unleashes the Cut for the first time, killing both Annika and Lev. He wounds himself to make the deaths look like an attack by otkazat'sya (non-Grisha). His mother and the camp retaliate by slaughtering and burning a nearby village. The story ends with Eryk vowing to create a safe place for Grisha.

Eryk's mother is a powerful shadow summoner, and she has taught him to conceal his own abilities and his true name.

After the questioning, we flash back to their arrival. Eryk's mother attends an elders' meeting, and Eryk explores the forest. He meets two sisters, Annika and Sylvi, by a stream. Sylvi is young and curious, while Annika is cautious. Eryk demonstrates his shadow powers, creating a disk of darkness that Sylvi playfully steps into. Annika is impressed but wary.

Confrontation with Lev

Soon, Lev, the Ulle's son, arrives with two friends. Lev is a Squaller (air summoner) and bullies Annika and Sylvi, calling Sylvi a
