Wind and Truth Ending Explained: Dalinar's Ultimate Gambit and the Birth of Retribution

The Final Contest: A Literal Account
With ten minutes left on the ninth day, Dalinar Kholin faces Taravangian—now the Vessel of Odium—in the contest of champions. Taravangian reveals his champion: Dalinar’s own grandson, Gavinor, aged into a Shardbearer by Odium’s temporal manipulation. Dalinar refuses to fight the child. Taravangian freezes Gavinor and gives Dalinar a choice: kill the boy and win, or forfeit and die.
Dalinar throws down his Blade. He will not trade one life for the world.
In that moment of refusal, Dalinar connects to the power of Honor on the roof of Urithiru. He speaks the Bondsmith Words and opens a perpendicularity, attempting to reclaim Honor’s Shard. But the power rejects him—until Renarin and Rlain, acting together, shatter the gemstone prison of Ba‑Ado‑Mishram, releasing the ancient Unmade. The act creates a loophole: Honor’s power no longer sees Dalinar as an oathbreaker because Mishram’s freedom changes the spiritual geometry.
Taravangian realizes what is happening and merges Odium with the remnants of Honor before Dalinar can claim it. The Vessel becomes Retribution, a new Shard combining the two opposing forces. The merger destroys the Stormfather, consumes the highstorm, and warps time around Roshar. Only the Light of Retribution remains.
Climax and Immediate Aftermath
Dalinar’s Death and Legacy
Dalinar does not survive. In the moment of merge, he sends a final wave of love to Navani before his soul vanishes. Navani senses his death and, with the Sibling, begins fortifying Urithiru against Retribution’s attack.
Taravangian, now Retribution, revels in his new power but immediately sees that the other Shards are watching him. Cultivation flees Roshar. Retribution realizes Dalinar’s gambit: by forcing a premature merger and drawing cosmic attention, the old Blackthorn has stolen centuries of preparation time. The true war for the Cosmere begins now, not later.
The Oathpact Reformed
After Ishar modifies the Oathpact, a pocket realm is created where time passes slower than on Roshar. The Herald Kalak wakes there, believing it a torture of Braize. He meets Kaladin, who reveals he has joined the Heralds to replace Jezrien. Kalak refuses to believe he deserves peace, but Kaladin convinces him to try one more time—a “final Return.” Taln is present and has forgiven them all. Kalak takes Kaladin’s hand, accepting the chance to heal and later return to Roshar. The first arc of The Stormlight Archive closes with this new, tentative hope.
Major Character Outcomes
Kaladin Stormblessed
Kaladin does not speak the Fifth Ideal. Instead, he completes his journey with Szeth in Shinovar, helping to confront the corrupted Honorbearers and eventually facing Ishar. Kaladin’s true apotheosis comes when he becomes a Herald, replacing Jezrien in the reformed Oathpact. He brings empathy and leadership to a group long broken by torture. See our Kaladin Stormblessed character page for his full arc.
Szeth-son-Neturo
Szeth achieves the Fifth Ideal of the Skybreakers during the battle in Shinovar, but immediately releases his highspren bond to seek out Skybreaker dissenters. He is forced by Ishar to experience the accumulated pain of all Heralds—yet he endures. His quest to cleanse Shinovar is completed, and his suicidal intentions are redirected toward a genuine purpose. Visit Szeth’s character page for more.
Shallan Davar
Shallan outwits Mraize in a knife fight, killing him with an anti‑Stormlight blade. She also fully accepts that she killed her mother—the Herald Chanarach—an act that sent Chanarach to Braize and triggered the True Desolation. This acceptance heals Testament, her abandoned Cryptic, and allows Shallan to move forward without the weight of her personas. See Shallan’s character page.
Adolin Kholin
Adolin leads the Unoathed—deadeyes and humans fighting together—to victory in Azimir after Maya returns with dozens of deadeyes. He distinguishes between oaths and promises, summing nine sets of Shardblades and Plate to arm his forces. Adolin proves that bonds can be reformed without traditional oaths. Explore Adolin’s page.
Navani Kholin
Navani survives atop Urithiru, grieving Dalinar while working with the Sibling to prevent Retribution from destroying the tower. She takes command in the immediate aftermath, knowing she must “grieve later.” The Sibling warns that Retribution is coming for all spren.
Jasnah Kholin
Jasnah does not die. She leaves Thaylen City sensing a hidden flaw in Odium’s plan, choosing to approach the problem as a scholar rather than a general. Her relationship with Wit has ended, and she privately doubts her effectiveness but continues to lead.
Taravangian / Odium / Retribution
Taravangian fully aligns his two natures—intellect and emotion—when Cultivation confronts him. He admits his true motive is personal desire, not necessity. As Retribution, he controls Roshar’s sole Light source. He intends to destroy spren but is blocked by the reformed Oathpact. The other Shards now watch him, forcing him to move earlier than planned.
Resolved and Unresolved Threads
Resolved:
- The Oathpact is reconfigured, giving Roshar a reprieve and a new Herald (Kaladin).
- Shallan’s past is fully reconciled; Testament is healed.
- Szeth’s quest to cleanse Shinovar succeeds; the corrupted Honorbearers are dealt with.
- Adolin’s Unoathed win the Battle of Azimir.
- Ba‑Ado‑Mishram is freed, ending the listeners’ stolen history but creating new chaos.
Unresolved:
- Retribution now holds two Shards and controls Roshar’s storms. The planet is dependent on his Light.
- The fate of the spren remains uncertain—Retribution intends to destroy them.
- Cultivation has fled; her location and plans are unknown.
- The Ghostbloods (Kelsier, Iyatil) still operate; Kalak was captured by Felt and Ala.
- The Wind’s identity and the original god of Roshar are hinted at but not explained.
- The larger Cosmere war—Valor, Autonomy, and other Shards—is now imminent.
Theme Resolution
The book resolves the core themes of the series:
-
Mental Health and Healing: Kaladin’s journey from suicidal thoughts to becoming a Herald who can heal others is the arc’s culmination. He learns that healing is not about erasing pain but carrying it together. See our mental health theme page.
-
Oaths and Promises: The climax contrasts rigid oaths (Dalinar’s refusal to kill Gavinor) with adaptive promises (Adolin’s distinction between oaths and promises). Honor itself bends because of Renarin and Rlain’s choice to free Mishram. Explore oaths and promises.
-
Power and Responsibility: Dalinar’s final act—sacrificing himself to force Retribution into the open—transforms power from a tool of domination into a means of protection. Read more.
-
Identity and Personas: Shallan’s acceptance of her own history and her mother’s death completes her arc. She stops hiding behind personas. Identity theme page.
The Epilogue: Majestic Improvisation
The epilogue follows Hoid (Wit) on Scadrial, where he applies for a coachman job with House Ladrian. He reflects that all art is improvisation and praises Dalinar’s final gambit: forcing Retribution to turn from Roshar to larger Cosmere threats. Hoid decides to first help Scadrial, then seek the Shard Valor to gain allies. He calls Dalinar’s sacrifice “brilliant storming job.” The scene underscores that Dalinar’s refusal to play by Odium’s rules bought the Cosmere a chance—at great personal cost.
Reasonable Interpretations
- Dalinar’s death is likely permanent, as his soul vanished. However, the Stormfather is gone, and Honor’s power is now merged with Odium—so no resurrection is foreseen.
- The pocket realm where Kaladin and the Heralds reside is a temporary reprieve. Whether they can truly return and win remains uncertain.
- Retribution’s power is unstable; he must be careful not to act against his own intent or suffer Tanavast’s fate.
- Hoid’s pursuit of Valor suggests a sequel arc in which the remaining Shards ally or clash.
Six Reader Questions Answered
1. Is Dalinar truly dead?
Yes. Navani confirms his soul vanishes after he sends her a final sense of love. The Stormfather also dies. No mechanism for his return is established.
2. What happens to Kaladin?
He becomes a Herald, replacing Jezrien in the reformed Oathpact. He stays in a pocket realm with the other Heralds, planning a “final Return” to Roshar.
3. Why did Taravangian become Retribution instead of a new Vessel of Honor?
Dalinar attempted to claim Honor but was rejected. In the chaos of Mishram’s release and time distortion, Taravangian merged Odium with the remaining Honor power before Dalinar could complete the Connection.
4. What is the fate of the spren?
Retribution intends to destroy the spren, but the reformed Oathpact protects them for now. Urithiru’s spren, led by Navani and the Sibling, are fortifying against his attack.
5. Is Ba‑Ado‑Mishram free?
Yes. Renarin and Rlain shatter her gemstone prison at the climax. She disappears and is difficult for Retribution to find, leaving her ultimate role ambiguous.
6. What does the epilogue mean for the Cosmere?
Hoid’s decision to seek Valor signals a shift from Roshar’s local conflict to a multi‑Shard war. Retribution’s premature birth draws the attention of all other Shards, starting a new phase in the Cosmere narrative.
