Summary

Léi wakes in the dark cellar beneath the Purple Lotus restaurant. She and Defense Minister Qin have been hiding there for days, sleeping on rolls behind a stack of onion crates and rice bags. When footsteps sound overhead, Léi fears discovery, but it is only the restaurant owner, Jia. Jia is late because she went to the market—and brings bad news: Léi’s taxi dispatch phone, website, and app are all offline. The Ministry of State Security has connected her to Qin and is shutting down her network. Tensions rise when Qin learns that their current location is known only to Léi; the American contact does not know where they are. After a heated argument, Qin apologizes and embraces Léi. Later, in private, Léi explains that she must now take a dangerous step: go out and leave a message for the Americans to find them.
