Summary
The chapter opens with Varg in the middle of a fierce melee aboard an enemy drakkar that the Bloodsworn have boarded from the Sea-Wolf. He uses his bearded axe and cleaver to kill several druzhina, his wolf-frenzy carrying him through the fight. The Bloodsworn, led by Glornir, have taken advantage of a distraction caused by Gunnar Prow and Halja Flat-Nose sailing past on another drakkar. After the initial rush, Varg is left breathless and exhausted. On the enemy deck, Glornir confronts a rune-wielder protected by a dome of red runes; one attempt to spear him fails as the weapon is incinerated. Meanwhile, the rune-wielder exchanges spells with Vol and Iva, creating explosions of flame and frost above the Sea-Wolf.
Hearing Vol scream, Glornir leads the Bloodsworn back to the Sea-Wolf. There, Vol is battling a second rune-wielder who is slowly advancing through her ice-storm, surrounded by a protective ring of red runes. Einar Half-Troll, Svik, Refna, and a group of children charge the druzhina guarding the rune-wielder. Svik is wounded in the hip and nearly killed when a druzhina raises a sabre to strike him. Orka Skullsplitter suddenly appears—along with Gunnar Prow, Halja Flat-Nose, and a small child—and kills the attacker, then cuts down several more druzhina, saving Einar and Svik. Glornir embraces Orka in a bear hug.
The first rune-wielder from the enemy drakkar steps onto the Sea-Wolf’s deck, and both rune-wielders begin chanting, forming new rune-spells that turn from red to white incandescence. Together they hurl the combined magic at Vol. She meets their attack with a high, keening song, but the impact creates an explosion of sparks and boiling steam that hurls Varg and the Bloodsworn to the deck.

- Rune Magic as a Destructive Force: The rune-wielders’ spells are shown as immensely powerful, incinerating a spear, creating boiling steam, and knocking warriors down. The element of fire and ice clash symbolises uncontrolled, opposing forces.
- The Reunion of Allies: Orka’s reappearance after the Grimholt (previous book) carries emotional weight, symbolising the gathering of key characters for the final conflict.
- Wolf Frenzy: Varg’s state of mind during battle continues the motif of animalistic rage and loss of self.
