Summary
In the days following the wolf bite, Aurora sinks into a haze of exhaustion and avoidance. She sleeps excessively, wakes from nightmares she can't recall, and refuses to look at her reflection because she fears seeing the wolf lurking there. She buys cigarettes and a bottle of Fireball, hoping to numb herself, but nothing works. She realizes her life must now revolve around the full moon, and she can't keep seeing Ian—she hasn't responded to his texts or calls, convinced that if he knew the truth, he'd reject her.
Her mother, Cyndi, insists on a mother-daughter lunch at a local restaurant. Aurora orders steak and eggs and a Bloody Mary, while Cyndi tries to steer the conversation toward the past, specifically about Dave, the man who abused Aurora when she was eleven. Aurora deflects, insisting they stick to approved topics. After lunch, they run errands for Scarlett's baby shower, stopping at Ash's house to drop off supplies. Ash is hosting the surprise shower, and Aurora is uneasy about it, but she's too drained to fight.
That evening, Ian calls, but Aurora lets it go to voicemail. She reflects on their easy childhood conversations and realizes how rare that kind of understanding is, but she also notes that understanding and acceptance are different things. Later, she has a nightmare in which she's a partially transformed wolf, feeding on something bloody, and Ian sees her as a monster.
On the day of the shower, Aurora forces herself to get ready, facing the mirror and confronting the wolf that appears behind her. She acknowledges that the wolf is part of her—her second face. She dresses in a navy dress and heels, then drives to Party City to pick up balloons, stewing in anger at Matty for leaving and at the situation that led to her bite. She catches herself smiling at the thought of killing him, and she feels a dangerous thrill at the idea of being lethal.
At the shower, Ash has decorated with a bumblebee theme. Scarlett's friends arrive, including Mia, who is surprisingly cordial with Scarlett. The party goes better than expected, but then Joann, Matty's mother, shows up, invited by Cyndi. Aurora is furious, but Scarlett seems fine with it. After the shower, Aurora and Cyndi argue in the car about Joann and about the past. Cyndi cries, and Aurora refuses to engage, saying she won't have the conversation. They drive to Scarlett's house, but Scarlett isn't there. They search for her, and during the drive, Cyndi breaks down, insisting she did her best and that Dave fooled her too. Aurora demands an apology, but Cyndi screams that she can't take responsibility. Aurora gets out of the car and walks home through the woods, the same woods where she was bitten.
Back at Scarlett's, Aurora finds Scarlett assembling the crib in the baby's room. They talk, and Scarlett admits she needed time alone. They discuss their mother's inability to take responsibility, and Scarlett says she understands. Aurora, feeling overwhelmed, confesses that she's a werewolf. Scarlett laughs, thinking it's a joke, but Aurora demonstrates by cutting her arm with a screw and showing the wound heal instantly, with silver goo and fur. Scarlett is horrified but eventually believes. They talk for hours, and Scarlett feeds Aurora deli meat. Scarlett asks who bit her, but Aurora doesn't know. That night, they share a bed, and Scarlett suggests Aurora see a therapist, offering to help. Aurora feels the distance between them despite the closeness.
