Summary: A Night of Terror and Deception
In this chapter, set in August 2023, Maya is jolted from a deep sleep by a guttural scream. Her immediate instinct is to reach for her husband, Nate, but she finds only cool sheets. Dizzy and with a throbbing headache from the previous night's drinks, she gets up to investigate. The house and grounds appear still, with only a single light on in an upstairs window of the main house.
Her new phone buzzes with a text from Kai, who is also awake and has heard the noise. Kai mentions seeing headlights near the gate and suggests they check the security cameras. However, without Margaret, who isn't answering, they have no access to the footage. Maya joins Kai in the main house, and they conduct a full sweep, finding no signs of a break-in. To help them both sleep before their trip to Milan, Kai offers Maya an Ambien pill.
As Maya is about to return to the pool house, she notices something unsettling: a knife is missing from the kitchen block. Her unease grows as she walks back outside and sees a light flickering in the pine forest at the edge of the property. Despite her fear, she ventures into the woods, calling for Nate. She sees a fox, but then discovers a muddy footprint—a man's footprint. The deeper she goes, the more disoriented she becomes. Her flashlight begins to die, and she hears the sound of a man in pain.
Panic sets in as she turns to run, but a wave of dizziness overtakes her. When she looks up, she sees a horrifying apparition: a young woman with pale skin and red hair, darkened by rain. It's Lila. Maya is convinced her exhaustion and fear are causing her to see things. She tries to flee, but the world around her warps. Rain begins to fall, then inexplicably turns to snow—an impossibility in August. Through the snow, she sees a figure dragging Lila's body. It's Matthew. She screams at him, tries to stop him, but he turns to her with black eyes. Someone shoves her aside and lunges at him, and there is a thud and blood everywhere.
Maya jolts awake, screaming. Margaret is there, soothing her, telling her she had a nightmare. Maya is disoriented, drenched in sweat, and covered in dirt, with twigs in her hair and dried blood under her nails. She asks where Nate is, and Margaret tells her he's gone for a run.
When Nate returns, he looks perfectly fine. He asks about the scratches on her neck, which she attributes to her nightmare. When she asks where he was, he claims he woke up early for a run. But Maya knows her husband of over ten years. She knows when he's lying.

Character Development
Maya: This chapter is a deep dive into Maya's fragile mental state. She is physically and emotionally exhausted, plagued by headaches, dizziness, and terrifying hallucinations. Her fear is palpable, and her perception of reality is clearly unreliable. The chapter shows her trying to rationalize events, but her paranoia, especially regarding Matthew, is consuming her. Her final realization that Nate is lying marks a significant shift from a woman haunted by the past to one who is now actively distrustful of her present.
Nate: Though absent for much of the chapter, Nate's character is defined by his absence and his suspicious behavior. His claim of going for a run after a night of heavy drinking is, as Maya notes, out of character. His
