Summary
The chapter opens with Nellie Coker sitting on a bench by the boating lake in Regent's Park, an unopened copy of the Express on her lap. The narration emphasizes her invisibility as an older woman in drab clothing—no one looks at her, which suits her purposes perfectly.
Sergeant Oakes joins her on the bench. Nellie knows he was sent by Maddox to spy on her, not to work for her, but she plans to use him to turn the tables on Maddox. Oakes reports on Chief Inspector Frobisher's activities and delivers a tip-off: there will be a raid on the Foxhole that night. Nellie realizes Maddox organized the raid deliberately so that Oakes could warn her and establish his credibility as a double agent.
