The chapter opens with Valerie Boren-Odell driving back to Talihina as a sudden weather front rolls in, shrouding the mountain roads in clouds. Her thoughts keep returning to the abandoned Ford LTD and the photograph tucked under its visor—the image of Sydney with a redheaded teenage boy Valerie now believes is her brother, Braden. She recalls Sydney's plea at Emerald Vista to tell Braden to come get her, and she wrestles with the question of whether Sydney is telling the truth or simply desperate to escape an unhappy foster situation.
