Summary
The chapter opens with Solace detecting a coded signal through her implant—a harsh, stuttering tick that she immediately recognizes as the arrival of the Partheni rescue party. She had been told a team was being assembled, but a picket ship must have been closer than expected. The infiltrators had approached the Broken Harvest under dead momentum, with gravitic drives stilled to avoid detection, relying on old-fashioned methods that modern sensor arrays would overlook. Solace sends out her own recognition code and receives bounce-backs from two separate infiltration points. She knows discovery is inevitable and imminent, and she begins pushing Kris toward the nearest signal, trying to guide the Hiver Trine as well. Kit, the Hanni, skitters away from her, not trusting her judgment.
As the gangsters become aware of the infiltration, chaos erupts. Heremon goes to order the defense, but Mesmon is already off the leash, heading for Trine to reclaim the precious relics the Hiver is carrying. Solace, unarmoured and unarmed, intercepts a human gangster who tries to use a magnetic pistol on her. She twists the weapon from his grip, slams him to the ground, and uses the gun to take down an incoming Castigar. But she is too late to help Trine directly. Olli, however, rams Mesmon with her walking frame, then launches a makeshift metal javelin from the frame that lances through his chest and pins him to the wall. Mesmon survives, working himself off the shaft with bloody foam at his mouth. Solace puts seven flechettes into him to slow him down, but the effect is minimal.
Kris calls out to Solace, pointing toward an armoured Partheni myrmidon. Solace directs Trine toward Kris and looks for Kit, but the Hanni is nowhere to be seen. Olli, meanwhile, is scurrying in the opposite direction, ignoring Solace's calls. Solace follows her, despite knowing she should leave the specialist to her own fate. Olli is heading toward something she needs to retrieve, not toward the Vulture. She tramples a technician who crosses her path, barely slowing. Solace catches up as Olli takes a sudden turn into a spherical room—Mesmon's quarters.
The room is dominated by a large a-grav bed, tanks and hoses set into one wall for Mesmon's hybrid biology, and the Scorpion mounted on the wall like a trophy. But what stops Olli at the doorway is the mosaic of faces covering the walls—virtual images, larger than life, of over a hundred beings twisted in pain, fear, or desperation. Most are human, some are Partheni, a few are Hanni, Castigar, and Hiver. Solace recognizes Rollo's likeness among them, his last moments captured from Mesmon's point of view. The Tothiat has been recording mementos of his work. They are standing within his résumé.
Mesmon arrives, punching Solace in the ribs and taking her gun. He flips Olli's walker over, spilling her out. He monologues about how he will be made to suffer for his failures, but that he will remember how he made them suffer. Solace attacks him mid-speech, slapping the gun barrel aside and driving her thumb into his eye. He grabs her throat, tightening his grip, and tells her that one day his people will make the Partheni extinct. As Solace's vision begins to black out, the Scorpion wrenches itself off the wall and crashes down behind Mesmon. Olli, still lying in the overturned walker, is remotely piloting the frame.
The Scorpion attacks Mesmon, slinging him across the room and cracking the wall. Mesmon recovers, rips the Scorpion's limb out of its socket, and opens the cockpit bubble, intending to neuter the machine. Kit appears, clinging to the Scorpion's back, and the tail arches over him. Mesmon swats the Hanni away, then reaches into the cockpit and rips out the entire control board. The Scorpion goes dead. But as Mesmon gloats, a greenish residue leaks from his mouth. He shudders, vomits, and a long black-and-yellow lobster-like creature falls from him—the symbiote that had been living within his flesh. Kit had poisoned him. Mesmon collapses and dies.
Solace finds Kit lying on his front, his screen cracked and dead, his limbs twitching. She doesn't know if he is stunned or dying. Olli, meanwhile, has dragged herself back to her walker and is sorting through tools. She tells Solace to go, to get Kit, Kris, Trine, and Idris out. But Solace refuses to leave her. Olli explains that the walker's board is compatible with the Scorpion's board—she can link them to replace what Mesmon tore out. Solace works under Olli's clipped directions, and as she works, she tells Olli about the Parthenon's internal debates. She speaks of Doctor Parsefer, the founder, and the question of what she truly wanted. She tells Olli about the War Party, a faction that wanted to strike first against Hugh, and how its entire leadership was found dead one day, all shot, all in different ships and star systems. The cabal that took over made it plain: the Parthenon would not become what the Colonials feared.
Solace also confesses to the existence of Sách vé faim—
