Summary

The chapter opens at a concert in Brooklyn, where the composer Paul James Smith—famous only in a niche artistic subculture—introduces a video by his late sister, Vincent. The video shows a forest path and an old-growth maple tree, but at one point the screen goes black for a second, accompanied by a strange mix of sounds: a few violin notes, a distant train-station cacophony, and a hydraulic whoosh.
