Full Summary
Rule of the Aurora King opens in the aftermath of the first book's events. Lor, a prisoner of the Aurora Prince Nadir, has been held for five weeks in his manor in the Void. She refuses to answer questions until she sees her siblings Tristan and Willow, who remain imprisoned in Nostraza. Nadir's sister Amya has sent word to Nostraza but shares nothing. Lor attempts to access the magic she locked away years ago, but it will not break free. Nadir, for his part, feels an intense magical pull toward her—his power strains in her presence as if trying to touch her, something he has never experienced before.
Flashback chapters introduce Serce, the Heart Queen and Lor's grandmother, at a summit in the Queendom of Heart. Serce is expected to bond with Atlas, the younger Sun Prince, to forge an alliance against the Aurora King Rion. She refuses to participate in the Trials, arguing she is a Primary and will not compete. At the ball, she collides with Wolf, the Woodlands King, and feels an intense connection that changes her life. She later publicly defies her mother, refuses the bonding, and leaves with Wolf for The Woodlands.
Back in the present, Lor attempts to escape the manor at night, stealing a magical brooch and heading south toward Nostraza. A grey creature attacks her, and Nadir and Amya rescue her. Nadir confiscates the brooch, explaining it needs charging. Lor demands he bring Tristan and Willow to her or she will never reveal her secrets. Nadir eventually releases them from Nostraza as part of their bargain, and the siblings reunite.
Lor tells her siblings about the Sun Mirror's prophecy: she is not the rightful queen and must find the Heart Crown. She shows them the golden locket containing a shard of the Crown. Tristan argues they should stop hiding and pursue their legacy. When Nadir demands answers, Lor reveals that Atlas killed her parents and imprisoned them in Nostraza as children. Nadir admits he hates his father and wants to bring him down, suggesting Lor might be the key. Lor reveals their grandmother was the Heart Queen who nearly destroyed the world.
The siblings reveal they are grandchildren of Serce. Their mother was hidden as a baby and raised in the Violet Forest. The Aurora King found them, killed their parents, and they hid a red jewel. Nadir explains Heart's magic has been absent for three centuries. Tristan suggests the Crown might unlock Lor's magic. Nadir proposes Lor accompany him to the Keep during the Frostfire festival as his companion to search for the Crown. She agrees.
At the Keep, they search the underground vaults and the east wing without success. Lor attends the Frostfire party, where she faces the Aurora King. Their uneasy alliance deepens into a fraught attraction, complicated by Lor's trauma and distrust. Nadir reveals his mother, the Aurora Queen Meora, has been catatonic for over two hundred years, a victim of his father's cruelty. Lor confesses that the king tortured her for years in the catacombs, trying to force out her magic.
Lor lifts the Aurora Torch, which speaks to her, saying it remembers her and warning that heartbreak and ruin lie with Nadir. The Torch tells her the Heart Crown is not nearby. Their search continues, and their physical relationship intensifies even as Lor struggles to maintain emotional distance. At a party, Nadir punches a Fae named Vale who flirts with Lor, and they argue bitterly. Lor declares she hates him.
When the Aurora King learns Lor's true identity, Nadir and Lor escape the Keep by air, flying to the manor where her siblings are hidden. Lor ends their romantic involvement but accepts his help. Nadir vows she will be his eventually. They travel to the ruined Queendom of Heart, where Lor spots a red rose blooming—the roses began appearing months ago, around the time she was taken from Nostraza. In the ruined castle, Lor's magic sharpens, and she can feel the Crown.
They find a hidden chamber behind an invisible barrier that only Heart magic can penetrate. Nadir helps Lor break through the internal wall blocking her magic, and she summons the Heart Crown. She refuses to try it on without Willow and Tristan present. Aurora soldiers surround them, and the king confronts them. Lor's power erupts in a dome of red lightning, and Nadir escapes with her by air.
Back at the manor, Tristan fuses the red jewel from the locket into the Crown. Lor places it on her head but cannot activate its power. She recalls the Mirror's promise of a gift when she returns with the Crown. They decide to return to the Sun Palace to consult the Mirror.
The final flashback chapter reveals Serce's fate. Pregnant with Wolf's child, she returns to Heart, where she gives birth to a daughter—the next Primary. As Rion's army marches on Heart, Serce seizes the Crown from her mother, binds her parents in arcturite cuffs, and performs the binding ritual herself with Wolf and the Woodlands Staff. As Rion's forces break through the gates, the magic surges, and the world shatters into darkness.
